I love my wife but sometimes a guy needs to be a guy, hole up in his man cave and just watch some television. In my case my man cave is the living room, which can still have aspects of estrogen, especially around the holidays. I’m thankful now that we’re verging on St. Patrick’s Day and the quite feminine Easter decorations haven’t come out yet, this way I can pretend it’s a man cave.
On this particular night my wife was headed to the theatre. When she told me that she was going to the theatre I had mixed emotions because A. I love my wife and B. I didn’t want to seem too outwardly excited to have a night where I can watch whatever I wanted to without being judged.
It’s not that she would judge me for watching Bait Car, she loves that show too. It’s the uber cheesy movies that they show on the SyFY Channel that guys can sometimes watch in lieu of a lobotomy. I kid, those movies are worse than a lobotomy. I’ve tried to watch many of them and always end up switching back to Bait Car, something on Spike or G4.
On this night I had a hall pass of sorts; I can watch whatever television that I want to, without any guilt. I really wanted to see IP Man 2, but it’s not available for rental yet. I really like Drunken Master, but have seen that more than a couple of times. I’ll get caught up on a movie that I wanted to see last summer by visiting our local video dispensing machine.
Inception it is. I had heard lots about this movie, all of it great and most of it confusing. This is not your typical ‘guy’ movie because it’s longer than usual, complex and very intelligent. I had a gut feeling that I needed to watch this without my wife because we tried to watch Memento and she couldn’t sit through it.
I’m not busting on my wife, Memento is a confusing movie. I saw it when it came out and it blew me away. It’s dark, evil, intelligent and one of my favorite movies. If you miss a couple key plot turns then you will be lost and wondering why (and how) this guy is taking so many Polaroid pictures.
I won’t try to explain Inception, but it’s more engaging than Memento and as good as The Dark Knight. What is great about Inception is how such a huge movie with so many set pieces can be emotionally engaging. I gauge great movies as to how much I think about them after I’ve seen them.
The Piano, Memento and The Dark Knight all made my head spin, in addition to making me think. Inception is a step above those films, it’s really amazing, but you have to pay attention or you’ll be totally lost. Next up for Nolan is the sequel to The Dark Knight, geeks rejoice.
In other man cave news: IP Man 2 is available to purchase now, hopefully for rent (for cheap dads like me!) very soon. Perhaps there is a theater night in the near future for my better half…?
