Slugterra: Ghoul From Beyond-new on DVD

Slugterra is weird.  That’s what I thought when I read the premise.  A 15 year old yearns for his father to take him to Slugterra where he can become The Shane, protector of the underworld.  To be clear, that’s the underground world, not the underworld where zombies live.   However, when his father goes missing Eli goes to Slugterra to protect it.  Slugterra: Ghoul From Beyond picks up after Eli has defeated a major bad guy, but things aren’t going so well.

Slugs being used as weapons in a gun?  That’s kind of silly, but it’s no sillier than making a cartoon out of Pac Man, which I was a fan of in the early 80’s.  Slugs being used as a weapon in a gun?  That’s creative, wonderfully weird and good entertainment for children 7 and up.

In Slugterra: Ghoul From Beyond Eli has just defeated the very evil Dr. Blakk.  Unfortunately this super villain vacuum means that every second tier bad guy is coming up and trying to make trouble. Just when these lower lever baddies arrive a true villain from the 99 caverns comes forth that changes the way slugs and gunslingers defend and protect.

What I liked about Slugterra: Ghoul From Beyond is that it’s really pretty and more clever than adults might think.  The animation is geared for older children, well, older than mine who are 4 and 2.  It’s far from dark and scary, but does have action elements that ages 7 and up are used to seeing.  All of Eli’s slugs smile and are obviously good mollusks and the ones from Blakk and the other badies have distinctly different looks.

Slugterra, the series airs on Disney XD and has elements of science fiction, action and pre teen humor.  You’ll believe a slug can fly.  It’s an action/sci fi movie with a running time of 44 minutes that kids 7 and up will enjoy.
