Get cooking with #ShroomTember, #Blendability, less fat & more flavor

I have partnered with Life of Dad, LLC for the #ShroomTember promotion. Sponsored by The Mushroom Council, the #ShroomTember promotion gives anybody the chance to win a $500 Visa gift card.  We cook for the family, there we are.  Sometimes through the process of cooking we get in a rut of conformity, stale recipes and sleepy taste buds. I’ve always been a fan of mushrooms.  One of my top 5 favorite dishes is the classic large portabella top with capers, horseradish, feta, bacon and pimento cheese.  For this task we took a normally meat dominant dish and replaced half of it with mushrooms.  Let’s see if our taste buds noticed!

#Shroomtember and your chance to win $500 is calling

OK, this is not a burger, but it’s got a bun and was served with chips.  It’s technically Sloppy joe is one of our go-to dishes.  It’s ridiculously simple to prepare and goes well in traditional sandwich form, over lettuce or simply on the plate.  We have it at least once a month and while it varies from person to person here’s how we normally make it:

1 pound of ground beef

A little catsup

A little mustard

Some onion flake or cut up onion bits

1 can of Gumbo style soup

Brown the beef.  Drain the fat, pour in the soup, put the rest of the stuff in and warm it up for a moment.  It’s simple and tasty.

However, what if we cut the ground beef in half and substituted it with mushrooms?  Well it would be cheaper, healthier and just might just wake up our taste buds if we blended in some mushrooms.

In our #Blendability recipe for #ShroomTember we only cooked half a pound of beef.  We blended 10 portabella mushrooms, put that in with the beef and cooked it the way we normally do.

Boom.  The result is a very tasty and healthier dish that my palette knew something was different, but really couldn’t tell you what it was. Do you have a mushroom recipe that is jumping out at you?

In #ShroomTember you have the chance to win a $500 prize just by creating your own mushroom recipe.  The categories are 1.  Simple dinner: with mushrooms and created in under 30 minutes. 2.  Blendability:  take out some meat/add some mushrooms, much like we did and 3. Mushroom burger recipe.

You can enter one of them or all of them.  It’s simple, tasty and fun, so get cooking.

Find all of the details on the contest over at Life of Dad.  It’s National Mushroom Month!  You don’t have to be a fun guy to celebrate.  Learn more about mushrooms from The Mushroom Council, dig their Facebook page, follow them on Twitter and enter.  $500 would go a long way towards rewarding someone, getting rid of debt or simply capping off a great day.  There is also a twitter party on September 23rd at 1 PM ET.
