Cirque Du Soleil’s #Amaluna drops your jaw and flips the plot a little

To an extent you know what to expect from a Cirque show.  The shows that Cirque Du Soleil put on are so remarkable that their first name has become an adjective that everyone knows.  They can make the simple amazing and the sublime superior.  Amaluna is playing at Atlantic Station through November 30 under the famed blue-and-yellow tent.Amaluna at Atlantic Station

And that tent.  Even when Cirque isn’t in town our 5 year old still says “that’s where the circus is!” when we drive past the empty area-and that was 2 years since he saw the last show! Amaluna takes the audience to a mysterious island that is governed by goddesses.  A rogue ship of pirates crash on the island and concepts of Greek and Norse mythology and many more influences are woven in to tell a story that allows for some utterly amazing stunts.

Acrobatics that seem ordinary but only because the Cirque performers do it so calmly and perfectly that it only appears that there isn’t an element of danger.   Where else can a performer arrange 25 some odd sticks on each other and it be a taut, entertaining exhibit?  A woman balancing on a large bowl of water?  Are you not entertained?  Actually, yes, the large water bowl is incredibly entertaining and how they build an act around that is one of the reasons why everyone likes Cirque.

Amaluna at Atlantic Station

Amaluna features a mainly female cast of performers this time out. I knew that something was different, but couldn’t quite put my finger on it.  It turns out that most of the other shows are 75% men; they simply wanted to make a performance that is 75% women and see how it came about.  The answer is awesome.  When you see the acrobats on the parallel bars keep in mind that Cirque recruited them from various college programs.

Even the band is all female.  The music in Amaluna is more rock oriented than previous shows.  Pay attention to the drummer and the guitarist.  The drummer especially was having a ball of a time banging the skins while the guitarist sounded and looked like she just came from Prince’s band.

The show runs just over 150 minutes and has a brief intermission.  Cirque is celebrating its 30th Anniversary in 2014 and in that time they’ve become the standard for travelling, family entertainment with a big touch of class.
