Click, Clack Moo: Cows That Type is a classic children’s book about cows that learn to type and start communicating with Farmer Brown. It was originally released in 2001, earned the Caldecott Honor Book award that same year and hasn’t aged at all since then. Click, Clack Moo: Cows That Type also translates very well onto the stage, specifically the puppet stage at Center for Puppetry Arts where it’s playing through July 26, 2015.

Center for Puppetry Arts does a great job of mixing up the style of puppets used in each show. Just like James Bond films the shows may differ in quality and enjoyment.  However, using that analogy Click, Clack Moo: Cows That Type is more aligned with Casino Royale than Quantum of Solace.

In other words, Click, Clack Moo is great fun that our whole family enjoyed. In this show they used marionette and rod puppets. If you don’t know what they means don’t worry, at the end of each show they turn on the house lights and basically explain how the show was done.

The puppets in this show are smaller puppets that are controlled by puppeteers standing above them. The great illusion of puppetry at Center for Puppetry Arts is that after a moment you don’t even notice the humans on stage controlling them.  They are just cows, a chicken or two, a farmer and maybe a couple other creatures.

If you’ve read the book you will not be disappointed by the puppet show. If you haven’t read the book it’s one of the best kid’s books that you’ll get your hands on. It’s clever, simple and very funny. The puppet show mirrors the book very well and had our five year old laughing out loud.  Even the three year old was entertained and the 45 minute show time was fine for his very limited patience.

Bonus: if you see the show on Saturday July 18 at 11 or 1 then you can see the Mobile Dairy Classroom in the parking lot after the show. A real milking cow from Georgia Mobile Dairy Classroom will be on hand with a handler to explain how cows produce milk, how much they produce and why they’re important.

Also guests with Autism can attend a sensory-family programming show on Sunday July 19 at 1:00. Click, Clack Moo: Cows That Type is at Center for Puppetry Arts until July 26, 2015 and you can purchase tickets online.
