Cross-town chili smackdown, 10/20, 11-1 at Firehouse Station 19 in Atlanta

We were compensated for this post. All thoughts are our own and we really do like chili and fires being put out. It’s great when a parent’s activities with their children can be win/win. On Tuesday, October 20 from 11 to 1 PM at Firehouse Station 19 in Atlanta there is just such an activity is happening. It’s a crosstown cook-off  between them and Firehouse Station 30. It’s free, open to the public and Atlanta Falcons cornerback Desmont Trufant will be on hand too. Firehouse Station 19 is located at 1063 North Highland Ave, NE.

The event is sponsored by Johnsonville who created it to honor the men and women who grew up to become the community heroes that every child wants to be. Both fires stations will create and cook their own chili or strew recipe using Johnsonville Sausage and a vegetable. Chefs are encouraged to also use local ingredients and spices. If peaches were still in season I’d bet on some combination of that, but being that it’s fall I’ll go with corn, garlic or others.

But your children probably don’t like it when the fire truck goes by, do they? Our youngest cranes his neck every time he hears a siren, most of the time it’s an ambulance, but when it’s a fire truck he always says ‘big fire truck.’ And when the fire trucks come to school it’s the same level of enthusiasm, just more subdued so that he can play it cool around the fire fighters.

The recipes will be judged by event attendees along with Trufant, and the winning fire house will receive a special Johnsonville trophy. Johnsonville is also donating $5,000 to the city’s fire department to show support and appreciation for their hard work in the community.

The chili cook-off is happening between Firehouse Station 30 and 19 in Atlanta on Tuesday, October 20 from 11-1. It’s being hosted at Firehouse Station 19, 1063 North Highland Ave., NE in Atlanta and it is free. A free chance to eat fabulous chili cooked by people who like it hot and the event is child friendly. We’re not telling ours until we pull into the parking lot. That way we can build up the suspense and make things pop with a grand surprise. All of that plus I get to eat some chili, Brunswick Stew and other tasty fall meat treats.
