Children’s music, kindie and Beat Bugs of note on Netflix

We’re were compensated for this post. All thoughts are our own. Our kids have loved music since birth. As parents we’ve also been aware of the content that is in that music. Sure there will be a time when radio with its suggestive, violent or misogynistic lyrics will be a part in their lives, but that time is a couple years away. There are some cool avenues for music that are appropriate for children on Netflix. One show of note is Beat Bugs, a series that is intended for younger children and features some Beatles’ cover songs.

I didn’t think that our oldest would like Beat Bugs. Its intended audience is up to 4 years old and he’s checking in as a senior citizen at 6 years old. However, he was the first one to discover the show and actively come back to watch it again. He said that he liked the funny characters and the music. Well that is logical.

The music in Beat Bugs are all cover songs from The Beatles done by today’s artists. The Shins, Chris Cornell, James Corden, Sia, James Bay, Pink, Eddie Vedder and others all have songs in some episodes. What’s more surprising is that the songs are good. It’s quality music that was recorded and performed with care by some cool musicians.

One might be expecting less than first caliber music in a children’s show. Go on, admit it. Part of that is what we’re used to in some children’s television programming. In some cases that is OK because the program’s intent is not to showcase the music.

If you have a really young child, say under 2 years old you’ve got more than a couple special episodes of Barney to choose from. These are all music oriented episodes that cater specifically to toddlers that will teach kids about numbers, the alphabet and basic life lessons

Baby Genius also has some music oriented episodes that teach those things, minus the large purple dinosaur.

Taratabong: The World of the Meloditties is a lesser known series that teaches kids about making music. This show is great for toddlers and also focuses on the instrument, which could lead to a child’s curiosity about actually playing one.

If you’re indo kindie, which is great music that is also great for children, then check out The Okee Dokee Brothers. Their latest release, Saddle Up, has an accompanying travelogue with videos from the release, as well as, beautiful scenery from the American west. The music in this is fabulous and The Okee Dokee Brothers are a favorite to win the Grammy Award for Best Musical Album for Children.
