Max Cliff Climber, a real toy truck with bite

Max Cliff Climber is one of the toys that our 5 year old wanted when we went to the toy store to research our gift guide. It’s a large truck with monster wheels. Really, the rear wheels open up to expose teeth when it climbs things or uses torque. It also has attitude and a sense of dry humor as part of the narration when it’s talking to you.

This is a big toy and its packaging is such that if you’re giving it as a gift you should plan ahead. Getting Max Cliff Climber out of the box will take a couple of minutes. Additionally, the toy is powered with a temporary battery pack that you need to remove prior to playing with it. Simply use a Phillips screwdriver put 6 C size batteries in the bottom of the truck and power it up.

There are three main play modes that Max Cliff Climber can entertain kids with. Its cab is also big enough to accommodate an action figure so that a superhero, princess or rogue animal can drive it. All of these modes are designed for normal toy used. Even though it looks like an all wheel drive beast, you shouldn’t use it in snow, ice, mud or rain. Take it outside and let it explore the back yard, just be sure to bring it back in once the lunch time whistle blows.

Max Cliff Climber can push or pull an astounding 100 pounds. Just like the ‘simulated play’ advisory, don’t let the kids push/pull your baby brother, dog, cat or that breakable lamp that your cousin Maxine gave you. This is a toy, not a substitute for work or a scaled down version of the all terrain vehicle that your wife won’t let you get.

Having said that, this is a very fun toy. Pull the shifter back to start any play mode and kids 6 and up will light up. To start the climb mode just press the siren and then pull back on the shifter. Max Cliff Climber will climb over most surfaces that are skinnier than the gap between its rear teeth when they chomp down. This is the climbing magic and kids will quickly realize that it’ll maneuver over the mass of toys and clothes that they weren’t picking up on their bedroom floor. We did this with a pile of books and it made quick work climbing over it with its gnarling teeth as it searched out more things to tackle.

The push and pull mode are both very fun and really can move weight. We loaded up a box with 35 pounds of books. It said “Woah, what kind of load you got back there?” or something to that extent and then moved it across the hall. Because that was so easy we put some heavier books in there and it still moved it.

Again, you’re not going to use Max Cliff Climber to clean up downed trees in the back yard, but this is very fun for kids to play with inside. It’s a quality, well made toy that weighs more than you think it does. Our 5 year old has to carry it with both hands, as does his 7 year old brother. It weighs about 9 pounds, which isn’t much in the grand scale of things, but for a toy truck it’s a big deal.

Assembling the toy is simple, but will take about 10 minutes to go from in the box to ready to play. Max Cliff Climber costs $49.99 online.
