A Netflix giveaway, plus Stranger Things 2 and other spooky doings

We’re part of the Stream Team for Netflix and were compensated for this. All thoughts are our own. October is a busy month. The family is all over the place with festivals, birthday parties and leaf watching. My wife and I have been looking forward to another watching this month and that’s the premier of Stranger Things 2 arrives on October 27. To celebrate that we’ll tell you why we think the show is so fabulous, give away some Netflix subscriptions and recommend a couple other shows for the kids and two for the older audiences.

Re: Stranger Things. Had this show been more graphic in its language or effects it wouldn’t have been as entertaining. More graphic violence would’ve limited its audience and dramatically decreased the amount of people that would’ve given it a chance. However, under the 80’s cloak it wears, the show manages to be an homage to movies and storylines from that era. The result is an engaging story that’s mature enough to be great for adults, with the right amount of scares to entertain-and be appropriate for teens. Stranger Things 2 starts to streams October 27 on Netflix.

For younger audiences there are lots of choices on Netflix that will help them get spooky, without making them lose sleep. Scooby Doo, the live action movie is one that our 6-year old loves to watch. It’s mildly scary for him and even then he knows there’s something silly around the corner. He also enjoys watching The Nightmare Before Christmas, Hotel Transylvania 2. His 8-year old brother likes watching Goosebumps. If your child is younger than both of them, they’ll dig Super Monsters, a monster driven show that’s great for preschoolers, who happen to be the children of world famous monsters.

For adults or teens who can take a real scare, check out Byzantium. Byzantium is a vampire tale about a small coastal town and the two women that are staying there. It’s bloody, neck snapping vampire at its bloodiest. Think Interview With A Vampire, with its elegance and beauty, but with more scares and blood.

Raw is as unconventional a horror film as they get. A student in veterinarian school is hazed and forced to eat raw meat. Alas, this student was a strict vegetarian and this ritual brings about a craving in her that was previously buried. Raw has strong sexuality, nudity and tension, lots of tension followed by grisly, bloody happenings. It’s a horror film that builds its tension by characters and not a freak with a knife. Its classic horror that might disturb some, but will leave others peering through their fingers as they try not to look.
