Ravi’s Roar, teaches through fun and not guilt

There are two current illustrate book series on kid’s emotions that have been in our wheelhouse lately. For our money, and for a couple of reasons the Big Bright Feelings series is much more enjoyable and effective. The later term is more important for us now because our 8 year-old is having issues processing certain things. Currently his ‘thing’ is anger, thus it was a perfect time for us to read Ravi’s Roar by Tom Percival.

Ravi’s Roar lets early elementary aged kids know that they’ll get angry and that’s OK, but it also lets them know how to deal with it.

Looking for children’s Earth Day activities? #ad

Earth Day is April 22.  You don’t have to get all Captain Planet in order to do things to take part in Earth Day.  In fact it’s better if you do little things every day of the year, as opposed to doing a one big clean out or group project.  If you’re looking for children’s Earth Day activities look no further than our monthly post over at the SC Johnson blog.

Peppa Pig-My Birthday Party: creative & fun characters for kids

We don’t have cable.  Because of that we miss out on some shows and networks.  Peppa Pig airs on Nick Jr. and is one that we hadn’t seen until this video.  Each episode is just over 5 minutes, has a very brisk pace and is quite disarming.  Our children, even the 4 year old, loved Peppa Pig.  Our 2 year old liked it too, but his way of showing appreciation consisted of pointing and yelling at the DVD cover.

New on DVD, Thomas & Friends: Spills & Thrills-good train fun for toddlers

One barometer of how old my children are is the shows that they watch.  Both boys love Thomas, but back when our first was young the transformation from real to computer animated trains threw me for a loop.   Now the computer animation is what I expect  from Thomas, Cranky and his other friends on Sodor.  Now our 2 year old watches Thomas the Train with his older brother, while he tries to pretend he doesn’t like it.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Kids Edition review: great tablet for safety and learning

Our four-year old boy loves the family tablet.   It was a handy potty training device and quite useful when on road trips. However recently it has become an issue because of one word: YouTube.  One day he discovered an ‘R’ rated, unauthorized version of a cartoon that he loves.  We were in the same room and turned it off immediately; but it was apparent that the learning aspect of tablets comes with a side that we don’t want him to be exposed to.  Enter the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3.  It was created by someone who needed a kid’s tablet while not worrying about the wrong kind of barnyard video spoiling the fun.

Children will love the Bigsby Interactive Story Buddy from Hallmark

As a gift the other year we gave one of the Hallmark interactive story characters to a friend’s child who had just turned 6.  The child loved the gift but I didn’t really get it.  Now that we have a child who is on the cusp of reading, I get it.  The Bigsby Interactive Story Buddy is another avenue for kids to enjoy reading and it really works.

The moment when a child knows what you’re thinking

Children are a fabulous, compact, confusing version of us.  What they see and do may not immediately be proof of them being from you.  Stop for a moment, twist what they’re saying, pronounce it like Urkel from Family Matters would and you just might understand what they’re trying to tell you. How many questions does a toddler ask in one day?

Why are stay at home parents so exhausted at the end of the day?   I read a sarcastic article that said that parents are tired because of all the questions they answer during a given day.  I put forth  the question of how many questions does a toddler  ask by marking down each time our 3.5 year old asked me a question.  Just for the sake of making it fun I also wrote down the questions, hilarity ensues.   Continue reading How many questions does a toddler ask in one day?
