Kid friendly scares on Netflix #StreamTeam

We’re part of the #StremTeam for Netflix and were compensated for this post. All thoughts are our own. Scary things to a child are relative. Today I wanted to highlight some of the fun, but slightly scary things that are available on Netflix. All of these shows are OK from a content perspective for our 4 year old to watch. They’re either designed for children or harmless enough to merit inclusion. Parents will enjoy some of these more than others, be warned….

Phineas and Ferb, season 1, episode 9, One Good Scare Ought To Do Ya

Phineas and Ferb is one of the greatest television shows ever. When we were kid-less, one of our friends who had kids said that we should watch it because the humor spanned generations and flew at a very quick pace. He was correct. This is the series that got so much better with each series its increased quality was obvious, even though the earlier episodes were still good. Their first Halloween special, Once Good Scare Ought to Do Ya is about the giant haunted house they built in the backyard to help Isabella get rid of the hiccups. It’s not one of their better episodes, but it is still very good.

Phineas and Ferb, season 3, episode 12 That’s the Spirit/The Curse of Candace

This season was the sweet spot for Phineas and Ferb. In this episode it broke the Halloween theme up into the length of a normal episode. The result is classic television.

Phineas and Ferb, season 4, episode 13, Terrifying Tri-State Trilogy

Still more great Phineas and Ferb. This three-part short story vignette weaves in humor where you don’t expect and many classic lines from Buford.

Mickey’s House of Villains

This is one of the few Mickey Mouse offerings and it is a great one. It weaves in some classic shorts from Donald, Mickey and others set against a backdrop of a gathering for the evil Disney characters. “It’s funny cause it’s true!” is just one of the lines that adults will like more than the kids.

Curious George: A Halloween BooFest

Enter: No Noggin. Both of our kids have watched this since they were toddlers. It’s classic Curious George with some mild Halloween scares to keep the kids engaged.

Bob The Builder, Season 1, Spooky Tales

A Bob the Builder that was spooky? Well, mildly spooky for the toddlers to 5 year old kids this will do the trick. This is the ‘new’ Bob the Builder where he’s modernized and looks a bit more street wise than the one from the mid 2000’s.

DreamWorks, Spooky Stories

Shrek and Donkey get in on the all age spooky fun with DreamWorks Spooky Stories. It’s the humor and timing that fans have grown to love from these characters over the years, slightly edgier, but still A-OK for ages 3 and up.

Casper’s Scare School

This is not classic animation from the perspective of adult viewers. However, kids do enjoy these tales about Casper being at school, his monster friends and the light scares that they pull upon the living world.

Scooby Doo Mystery Incorporated

Our oldest was 5 when he found Scooby Doo Mystery Incorporated. This is not classic Scooby. It’s Scooby with a taste of alternate timeline, mixed in with stereotypical monsters and those that you can’t quite explain until the final episode. The animation is great, it’s funny, kid friendly scary and OK for 5 and up.

Good Luck Charlie, season 2, episode 25, Scary had a Little Lamb

There are some shows on television that give television a bad name. It’s the Saved By The Bell of our time-but we should know better by now. Good Luck Charlie (and some others…) are like that. It’s harmless milquetoast television that kids and tweens will watch with no effort. It’s comfort TV to an extent, but that could be giving it too much credit.

Lab Rats, Season 2, episode 20, The Haunting of Mission Creek High

Similar to Good Luck Charlie, except with more of a boy’s/action bent. Low brow comedy that kids will love and adults can nap to.

Girl Meets World, Season 2, episode 18

The obligatory, second season holiday series of episodes for Girl Meets World. See: Lab Rats or Good Luck Charlie

The Gruffalo

This is not technically a Halloween episode, but given the past three turkeys I didn’t want you to think this was a Thanksgiving post. The Gruffalo is charming, classic, warm, full of heart and has enough of a ‘boogey man’ to entertain anyone.  See also: Room on the Broom, which is as good.
