Adventure Time, #TheUltimateAdventure succeeds on every level

(spoiler free review of Adventure Time, The Ultimate Adventure) Television series finales are a tricky thing. That is, assuming that it’s a loved series that’s coming to an end. If it’s not, then it’ll trickle off into a Trivial Pursuit answer to the Television category. A loved show is special and precarious because everybody wants you to succeed. Adventure Time is ending its ten year run with an epic 44-minute series finale. The series finale to Adventure Time, The Ultimate Adventure airs on Cartoon Network on September 3 at 6PM ET.

All age comic books for July 18

There are lots of great all age comic books out this week. There is something for everyone from ages 5 and up. True story: we were in the comic book store this week and I overheard a dad looking for something for his 5 YO girl. The comic book store employee helped him out, but their suggestions were aimed at too high of an age. Over in the podcast we’ll chat briefly about how a parent of young children can navigate the comic book store successfully. For now let’s look at three comic books that will entertain even the pickiest of young readers who are 5 and up.

Disney Princess #21

That dad in the comic book store needs to check this out. Disney Princess is a monthly comic book from Joe Books that hammers the young girl demographic with humor, princess stories, heroism and girls who they already know. That young of an age won’t be able to read them, but that’s why mom and dad read to kids at night, isn’t it?

Futurama Comics Annual #1

From Bongo Comics this is the first annual from Futurama Comics. That comic book is no longer being printed physically, but does have new content distributed via the Futurama app. It’s because of that fact that this issue is one of our picks of the week. This series is funny to ages 8 and up and will especially poke the funny bone of Simpsons fans who yearn for some Planet Express.

Rise of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is the new version of the animated TMNT that was previously on Nickelodeon. Rise will still be on Nick and the new comic book will be out on IDW Publishing. These are the turtles that are in line with the ‘animated TMNT’, they’re more kid friendly-without skimping on the action, but not as old as the ongoing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic book. Issue 0 is out this week and is great for ages 6 and up.

The Call of Cthulhu is graphic novel fun and Lovecraft 101

I don’t know much about The Call of Cthulhu, but I was a big fan of The Call of Ktulu by Metallica when Ride the Lightning came out. The uninitiated like me on The Call of Cthulhu can get up to speed on the classic book by H. P. Lovecraft in its graphic novel edition. It’s presented as part of the Dark Tales imprint on Canterbury Classics Books. The art in it is done by Dave Shepherd and its result might just depend on how much you know about the story. All age comic books for May 16

New comic book day is every Wednesday; it’s when comic book stores receive their new comics. In those shipments are a dozen or two all age comics that are Ok for younger readers. In this post we highlight lots independent press comic books, as well as the big houses, DC and Marvel Comics. If you’re new to all age comic books and looking exclusively at those two publishers you’ll only be seeing a minority of the comics that are OK for kids. In the podcast we’ll chat about the ‘life’ comics that are good for tweens, plus Moe from The Simpsons gets his own one shot, Steven Universe, Sonic the Hedgehog and more. For now, let’s look at three all age comic books that will be appropriate for ages 6 and up.

Future Quest Presents, #10

DC Comics has this great series that blends classic Hanna-Barbera properties in new stories that will entertain readers 8 and up. Future Quest Presents #10 is about Dorno of the Herculoids. Yeah, I didn’t know who they were either, but in the late 60’s that was a cartoon jammed with dinosaurs, dragons apes, huminoids and science-fiction. This is fun, creative stuff that kids won’t be familiar with, but will love nonetheless and be the cool kids sharing things that their friends don’t know about yet.

Garfield 2018 Vacation Time Blues

Boom! Studios is one of the largest houses that produces all age comic books. A certain lasagna-loving cat has his adventures printed there and Garfield 2018 Vacation Time Blues is an oversized issue that packs in Odie, Jon and Liz as they enjoy the summer. Garfield is timeless and just as funny in a comic book format as he is in cartoon strips.

Invader Zim, #30

Darkpoop Cola might have evil plans. Dib is out to get a bottle of it before Gaz stops him. Kids might have seen Invader Zim on television or maybe they’ve read through one of his comic books. Either way, Invader Zim is just what kids want, it’s gross and rude enough to where they can laugh, but not too inappropriate for some kids. Ages 8 and up will love this comic book. Who am I kidding, kids even younger than that have probably seen the show, so parents, use your judgment on this one.

In Real Life, where avatars meet real-world consequences

Video games when I was a kid were simple on so many levels. It was just me and a friend, at his house, because he had an Atari and my parents wouldn’t let me have one. It’s a whole new world now and In Real Life is a graphic novel by Cory Doctorow with art by Jen Wang that examines the relationships and economics that takes place in-and out of video games. It’s the trinkets, jobs or vehicles that players can purchase with real money whilst playing the game. In Real Life takes a look at the sub-culture of those that sell things in games who are usually in impoverished conditions in emerging markets; as well as the different levels of players who take part in the game.

Star Wars, The Last Jedi-great parts, good whole

This is a spoiler free review of Star Wars, The Last Jedi. First off, Star Wars, The Last Jedi is a very good film that doesn’t need to be graded on a curve. This is the superhero or James Bond movie caveat that fans add to the end of its description. “It’s a good James Bond film”, is often a way of saying that fans of 007 will enjoy it, but, as a film it doesn’t set that high of a bar. Even without a curve, Star Wars, The Last Jedi is good, but fans of the franchise; if they look deep within themselves, will acknowledge that there are flaws that place it squarely in the upper third of the pack.
