Coming clean to knowledge and laundry with LG at Best Buy

The reviewer has been compensated in the form of a Best Buy Gift Card and/or received the product/service at a reduced price or for free.  Don’t tell my wife, but there are many things that I don’t know. For example, it wasn’t until we got married that I separated the colors from the darks. Sadly, some of her clothing items were the canaries for my coal mine-laundry experiences. My clothes were already used to the milquetoast, middling of the clothing that had been happening in my world for years. I simply needed a better class of washer. For people like me, LG is coming clean with some great options at Best Buy, deals and I realized that I need a Sidekick-and not the superhero kind.

It’s time to tackle the elephant in the room with DIYZ® App

This post is in collaboration with DIYZ. All opinions of apps and companies that help me complete DIY projects are my own.

We needed to do something about our kitchen. It’s not that we’re selling our home; we just need to be ready in case it has to be sold quickly or we wanted to stop cooking in a room that hadn’t been updated since Growing Pains first aired. Combine that with the fact that Mother’s Day is coming up and we had to get going. Do we paint the kitchen cabinets ourselves or  have someone else do it or get all new cabinets? That final choice was far too expensive and hiring someone to paint kitchen cabinets would’ve cost upwards of $3,000. With a little encouragement from DIYZ App we jumped into a relatively simple, but at the same time gargantuan task of painting our kitchen cabinets.

Helping at Hope House with Ford Volunteer

With both kids in school I’ve got a little more time to volunteer. We’re doing some work with their school in the library and help the teacher out when they have specific requests. This week we’re also joining some folks from Ford Volunteer to do some light construction at Hope House in Atlanta. Hope House is a place in Atlanta that offers temporary housing for people that are having substance or mental health issues.

‘Light construction’ is key toward my volunteer time. I’ll be putting up some shelves, tightening doors or other things and some tree trimming. A tree with its dead branches removed is a happy tree indeed.

Ford Volunteer is taking part in lots of projects as part of their Global Caring Month this September. I look forward to meeting some new handy people as we help out at Hope House in Atlanta. If their cause is one that you want to assist you can read more about them or donate online. You can also follow our twitter stream on Friday, September 16 to check out some of the photos from our construction.

Making #DadTime with Lowes and home improvement

I have partnered with Life of Dad and Lowe’s for this promotion. One of my best early memories of my dad was when he helped out at my elementary school. The classes were building wooden toy cars and he was there helping put them together. That was one of the first things I remembered when he told my wife that I was always better than him at fixing things. He sends me indirect praise through my wife like that, he’s old school. Now that our kids are getting older I’m doing my best to include them in some quality #DadTime Lowes projects around the house so that I can tell the same thing to their wives in 20 or 30 years.

I jest, I’ll tell them to their faces that they’ll never be able to fix things as well as I can.

DIY do-over or dreaming, enter the #FixMyHouseSweeps from ServiceMaster

If you own a home there is a great chance that you’ve worked with ServiceMaster in one way or the other. The first home that I bought came with a warranty from American Home Shield that covered the component in the house like the plumbing, electrical, HVAC and much more. At our current home we’ve used Merry Maids and Terminix ensures that termites don’t think of the wood in our house as a snack. ServiceMaster is the parent company of these, as well as, AmeriSpec, Furniture Medic, SericeMaster Clean, ServiceMaster Restore and are having a contest for $2,000 in GE appliances each week through July 6 and a Grand Prize Drawing for $5,0000 in Home Depot gift cards.

Either of those prizes would go a long way toward either improving or renovating your home. When it comes to home repairs and renovations it’s important to know your limitations. According to a study done by ServiceMaster they discovered that 58% were unprepared to address any issues, 54% weren’t knowledgeable on how to fix it and 83% said that they wanted one resource that could fix everything.

Personally, I know not to even attempt electrical or plumbing.  I learned that through trial and error, mainly error. It’s always been safe, but the results did not have the professional appearance that you want.  Do you have a DIY project that didn’t turn out the way that you wanted it to? Do you have a project at the house that needs to be done?

Either way just take a photo of it and share it to ServiceMaster’s Facebook page. Be sure  to tag it #FixMyHouseSweeps and you are entered.

How to install a refrigerator gasket

Who is putting magnet droppings inside the refrigerator? I looked at the boys just in case they had taken scissors from the craft closet. I checked if the magnet monster in the house to see if they had to use the bathroom. Both situations were negative. After looking at the refrigerator door I saw that the gasket had a crack along the top and that it was also fraying parts of it, leaving it inside and creating a loose seal once it was closed.

DC Super Heroes Origami is folding paper fantastic, but challenging

Howdy, we received a copy of the book for review-all thoughts are our own. Our big fingered, difficult to fold Origami paper own thoughts. One thing I will always remember from when I lived in Japan was this time when a group of us went to a local yakitori. One of my Japanese friends sat down and started folding the napkins into any manner of animals. He did a snake, dragon, shark and more all before our eyes. He was a paper folding Criss Angel. DC Super Heroes Origami would make my friend smile. It has 46 different folding projects of varying difficulty for you to build your own paper version the DC universe.

Naptime DIY: killing weeds with the BernzOmatic Lawn and Garden Torch

We’ve tried a variety of methods to kill our weeds. Brand name stuff, vinegar, salt-you name it. “Why not try fire”, a friend of ours suggested. The BernzOmatic Lawn and Garden Handheld Torch Head is just that. Using propane, it supposedly burns weeds to the core. But does it really- and more importantly, is it safe?
