Little Boy is a mixed bag of message, magic #FandangoFamily

The trailer for Little Boy and the actual film are quite different.  In a way that’s a good thing because the trailer does not give away key points of the film. The trailer presents a film that focuses on an 8 year old boy whose father goes off to war and the bond that connects them. That aspect of the plot runs all the way through it, mixed in with some childhood bullies, lessons in being different and what life was like in the mid 1940’s. The film is a  mix of drama, comedy and war movie, but those descriptions aren’t the reason for the mixed bag.

Little Boy, inspiration and a boy’s love for his father

Little Boy is a film that I’ll be watching soon for #FandangoFamily. It’s rated PG-13 so I won’t be taking our children who are three and five, but from the reviews that I’ve read it’s a solid film for date night, teens and the upper age tween children. Little Boy is the story about the relationship between an eight-year-old boy and his dad.

Monkey Kingdom is simian, nature driven fun at the movies #FandangoFamily

We do some writing for #FandangoFamily and are compensated for this post. No monkeying around, all thoughts are our own. Every Earth Day DisneyNature releases a nature documentary in movie theaters.  For 2015 it’s Monkey Kingdom and for every movie ticket sold in its first week of release $1 will be donated to Conservation International.  That money will go to support Conservation International’s programs in Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Cambodia that protect monkey and other endangered animals. Monkey Kingdom was better than my wife thought it would be and kids 10 and under will enjoy it for a variety of reasons.

Home is where you want to be instead of watching this film

On a rainy day we went to the movies to see Home.  Home is the animated story of Oh, an alien whose species invades Earth. The species, the Boov, move all of the humans to special districts where they have live and where you wish you could go about midway through the film.

Home, the review, is where you want to be instead of watching this film

Cinderella is charming, simple entertainment #FandangoFamily

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before.  A commoner with a good heart gets these magic slippers made of glass.  She goes to the ball that the Prince is having, they hit it off immediately, but she has to get back to her country house before the stroke of midnight.  Of course you’ve heard it before because  Cinderella is the template that dozens of wannabe classics have vied to become.  The new live action version of Cinderella, despite a rough beginning, largely succeeds because it sticks to the classic material.

What the kids are watching on Netflix #StreamTeam

We’re part of the StreamTeam with Netflix and were compensated for this post. This month on Netflix the kids discovered some really excellent shows that were brand new to them.  We also re-discovered some great movies from back in the day, a couple more recent releases and one that the wife really loves.

The Aviators never takes flight, WWI true story with pigeons

The Aviators is based on a true story about pigeons in World War I.  I assume that the true story was from the perspective of humans and that they made the movie from the pigeon’s perspective, because it would be entertaining for children.  If that were the case then this could’ve been it, but this version of The Aviators feels like a TV movie that stretches out to a very long 73 minutes.

The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness, a touching film about anime, life and Japan

Studio Ghibli is synonymous with anime.  Mention a well known anime film and Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli are most likely behind it.  The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness is a documentary about a year behind the scenes at the studio that coincidentally happened to coincide with the production of Miyazaki’s final film, The Wind Rises.
