Going out to the movies is a rare act for moms and dads. In this series we’ll go to the movies, so you can judge for yourself if it’s a good investment.
We had the chance to speak with Sean Anders, the Director of Instant Family. Instant Family is the semi-autobiographical story of Anders and he and his wife’s decision to adopt children from foster care. “Based on a true story” or semi-autobiographical are interesting to me because I always wanted to ask where the ‘true’ stops and the ‘story’ starts. Out of the gate I asked Sean Anders where the story for Instant Family broke with reality.
The other week we had the opportunity to interview Sean Anders, the director of Instant Family. Instant Family is a true story; it’s actually his true story of how he and his wife decided to adopt children. Actually, they decided to adopt three children, all at once. The movie looks funny and something that families can immediately relate to or for anybody that has children or any familiarity with the foster care system.
Instant Family was filmed in Atlanta. I remember seeing the signs for filming locations around certain neighborhoods and hearing the extra casting calls from some friends of mine who do production. While it’s the true story of one family’s decision to adopt, the film is not preachy and brings the humor and fun that kids bring-while not glossing over the difficulties that raising any child can present. It’s a delicate balance that was accomplished by weaving in conversations that Anders and other newly adopted foster families had in real life.
The Atlanta sneak preview of Instant Family is Monday, November 12 at 7PM. If you want to go just tweet this out and the first 20 folks will get a pair of tickets to the show. You can also email us at trey@daddymojo.net and we’ll reply back with a magic code that will link you to tickets.
Instant Family is rated PG-13 for thematic elements, mild sexual material, language and drug references. In our opinion the film is OK for 9 year-olds, but that’s us.
Why does this film have two directors? I wondered as the credits rolled in The Nutcracker and the Four Realms started. By the middle of the film I was wondering how much worse the film could’ve been had it not actually had two directors. Much like any number of recent films (Solo, The Last Jedi, JLA) that have had integral people behind the scenes replaced; the result is a jumbled mess that’s barely entertaining and leave you wondering how this all came about.
We were provided tickets to see the film-all thoughts are our own. I’m a history buff. I’m also a movie guy. I’m always optimistic when a film comes out that is truly based on actual historic events comes out. I want it to be good, but too often my hopes are dashed by one thing or another. Operation Finale opens in movie theaters on August 29. It’s the true story of the hunt for Adolf Eichmann after WWII.
Action movies don’t have to be mindless and there are many examples smart action films. Even mindless action films can be enjoyable if they have characters or fun sequences. Mile 22 aims high on paper and falters badly in execution. It has Mark Wahlberg, Lauren Conrad from The Walking Dead and Iko Uwais among others in a film that’s directed by Peter Berg. Some folks will look at Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg and hope for a repeat of one of their earlier successes. If you’re like me you’ll watch Mile 22 because it stars martial arts super star Iko Uwais. Others will look at Lauren Conrad and are curious to see how she does when she’s not acting opposite some zombies.
We were compensated for this post-all thoughts are our own. We’re an animal house. My wife married into a house that had two cats and two dogs. As she ingrained herself into those that already lived with me they learned to tolerate and protect her. It was more complex for the dogs. One of them continued his lazy dog ways, while the other one immediately warmed up to her and became her steadfast defender, even though she had three legs-more on that in a moment. For people and homes that understand dogs, for my dog people or for those that simply want a safe, entertaining film for the family they can check out Dog Days, arriving in theaters on August .
If you look inside yourself and are honest, you know what to expect from a movie before you step inside the movie theater. Even if you don’t know what to expect, you probably have an inclining of how you’ll enjoy the film. “This is more of an animated feature, it’s not really a film” I glibly said to an adult next to me before Teen Titans GO! To The Movies started. It was partially because our 8 YO son had just asked what the film would be about and I had absolutely no idea. Within five minutes of the film starting I still had no idea what the film would be about, but I was laughing more than I had at any movie in years. Continue reading Teen Titans GO! To The Movies, the best family film of the year
