Dad is a proud man. My sister and I often say this when he’s being strong willed. That’s another way to say he’s not complying with what the doctors say is best for him. I am the Sandwich Generation, taking care of small children, being a husband and taking care of an elderly parent at the same time. Why does being a dad rock? #ThanksBaby for these reasons and more

I partnered with Life of Dad and Pampers for this promotion. A politician once said, there are known knowns and known unknows. That’s a riddle, parable for parenting and political babble all mixed up in one. With Father’s Day upon us it’s time to say #ThanksBaby for making us dudes into people who we otherwise wouldn’t be.

Prior to being a father I was just a guy trying to figure things out. Even after our first son was born I didn’t know what I was doing. Now that our second born is five I feel like I know more than I did the first time, but we’re dealing with an entirely different person, so things are different. Two years from now I’ll look back where I am currently and willingly acknowledge that I didn’t know anything.

I mentioned earlier about the metaphorical stocking that exists for Father’s Day. I Love You With All My Butt, an Illustrated Book of Big Thoughts From Little Kids is a very good fit for that and beyond.

When our 7 year old was 3 there was a knock at the door. “Who’s at the door? Is it monkeys”, he asked and then answered. Literally he asked a question and without hesitation provided us with his answer. “Well, if it’s monkey’s we’re moving”, my wife said without missing a beat.

If Father’s Day had a stocking then Dad, Hundreds of Awesome Quotes about the Guy Who Does It all would be in there. Of course, Father’s Day doesn’t have that, instead it has neck ties and after shave. These are both two things that most of my friends (thankfully) don’t use too much of. Think of a famous person, be them man or woman and in any field, sports, entertainment, literature, religion and even some old proverbs. This book lives up to its title and indeed has hundreds of quotes from these people about their dad.

If My Love Were A Fire Truck, gets dad love and more

In the kid lit book world it’s a thin line between sappy dad love and over the top machismo. Usually it’s the stereotype of a well intentioned dad trying to fix something that goes astray. It’s a close relative to the dumb dad that advertisers used to rely on far too much. If My Love Were A Fire Truck by Luke Reynolds with illustrations by Jeff Mack is children’s book that straddles that line with ease. It shows the father figure in the book doing all manner of activities with his son, albeit in his imagination.

With Father’s Day coming up one expects to see more than a couple children’s books aimed at dads. Some will succeed merely because they cater to dudes, while others will have heart, in addition to being able to be read by moms too.
