Bobs and Tweets, Trick or Tweet is emerging reader gold

Somewhere in an elementary school right now you can hear a giddy eeek, immediately followed by about 10 minutes of silence. Obviously the later sound is quite soothing and educators (and young readers) that first sound is associated with joy also.  Bobs and Tweets Trick or Tweet is book #3 in the Bobs and Tweet series from Scholastic and for young readers of a certain age this staple, talk about on the playground reading.

Skelly’s Halloween is age appropriate skeletal fun

Happy, happy, joy, joy. Halloween is a fun time to be a book, especially if you’re a kidlit, friendly, happy go-lucky book about skeletons or the undead. Skelly’s Halloween is that kind of children’s book for children that are 3-8 years old. It’s manic, skeletal happiness with full color pages that those ages will love and be able to read on their own as they approach the upper end of that demographic.

A Festival of Ghosts creeps throughout for kids with spooks, without gore

Ghosts are real, accept that now. There are also people who have the skills to communicate with them. These people help them deal with their questions, unresolved issues or the occasional ill-tempered or misinformed poltergeist. A Festival of Ghosts is the second story to feature Rosa Diaz and the town of Ingot that has dozens upon dozens of spectral happenings, plus a pair of middle schoolers who are up to the challenge.

Me, Myselfie & I, A Cautionary Tale rings true for too many folks

We would all be better off without social media, wouldn’t we? A blogging friend of mine had to re-access his social media usage when his 4 YO daughter drew a picture of them-and they were on the phone. After that illustration they went on a social detox to evaluate what’s really important. Me, Myselfie & I, A Cautionary Tale is a book that some parents need to read and all parents won’t mind reading.  Thankfully, it’s presented in a manner that kids in pre-K through second grade will actually want to read it also.

Moreover, the book is one that parents can read without feeling guilty. It celebrates the smartphone, as well as social media and presents the life bonding moments that they can bring. The book also teaches the lesson of moderation, which is one that we all could use a reminder of from time to time.

The Darkdeep runs from the first page and doesn’t stop

It’s a great thing when books run. This is that sensation you get when there is no introduction to the character or their story, yet, from the instant you read the first sentence it gets your imagination running. The Darkdeep runs like no other book we’ve read in the past couple of years.

The ground leapt up to smack Nico in the face.

That’s the first line from the book. I knew nothing about Nico, nor the plot of The Darkdeep. However, that sentence almost felt like a question, followed by a series of challenges or dares. From that opening sentence it only gets better with readers seeing Nico, Tyler and Emma-three typical pre-teenagers playing on a foggy day in the Pacific Northwest. The basic personality elements are established, the town bully comes over the horizon and the catalyst for The Darkdeep is put into play.

Princesses Save The World, but muddle up this book

In theory there is nothing that anyone should have against this book. Girl power-check girls can do anything, we got that memo. Nature is good-check, everyone totally agrees with that one too. We love the bees, can’t imagine our toast without their byproduct and want to see them on our butterfly bushes for millennia to come. Princesses Save The World has noble intentions, but ends up landing on the low end of a narrow “For Princesses Only” book category.

Meet your new favorite good night book…Are You Scared, Darth Vader?

Skeptical I was. Fearful of a children’s book with Lord Vader on the cover. Fear, dread of a different kind. Take a beloved character. One who withstood the drudge of The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith and still managed to emerge on the other side as cool as he entered them. Fear not readers of any age. Are You Scared, Darth Vader? by Adam Rex is a joy to read. This is a beautiful book that will immediately ingratiate itself into your children’s library and it’ll stay there for generations.

Santa Bruce, warms the heart of all who read it, even grumpy bears

Everyone loves a curmudgeon; especially the curmudgeon lite, a la Hugh Grant, to me they’re impossible to resist. Sure they appear grumpy, but you know that deep down they love not bad, they simply want to evoke a crusty exterior, most likely to put off unwarranted salespeople. Somewhere between Hugh Grant and Archie Bunker (but much closer to Hugh Grant) is Bruce, the bear who inhabits the books by New York Times Best-Selling Author Ryan T. Higgins.  Bruce is back in Santa Bruce, a seasonal Christmas tale about a grumpy bear, three irrepressible mice and the rest of the animals in the forest who have a big surprise coming their way.
