Bobs and Tweets, Trick or Tweet is emerging reader gold

Somewhere in an elementary school right now you can hear a giddy eeek, immediately followed by about 10 minutes of silence. Obviously the later sound is quite soothing and educators (and young readers) that first sound is associated with joy also.  Bobs and Tweets Trick or Tweet is book #3 in the Bobs and Tweet series from Scholastic and for young readers of a certain age this staple, talk about on the playground reading.

Bobs and Tweets was the first book series that our oldest could request for by name when was in kindergarten. Bobs and Tweets is not social media slang. Rather the Bobs and Tweets are two different families who live across the street from one another. They’re very different personally and from a clean perspective, but both are active, manic families with similar aged children.

This Halloween night Dean Bob is dressed up as King Neptune as he crosses the street to get his best friend, Lou Tweet. She’s dressed up the same as her siblings, as a string bean. Toss in Chopper the dog, Pretty Kitty who belongs to the Tweets and a new family who just moved into the neighborhood and you’ve got Bobs and Tweets, Trick or Tweet.

The reason young readers like reading this series of books so much is due to the text and the art. The illustrations by Kristy Caldwell are large, soak up every area of page space in the book and full of energy. The text in Bobs and Tweets is simple, almost poetically based, rhyming fun. Most of the pages have four lines of text with the first two and later two rhyming.

This is sight word heaven for emerging readers.  Once they can identify a sight word the odds are great that there will be another word that they can read all by themselves on the next line. On any random page you will find at least 10 three-letter words that kids in kindergarten are learning, will learn or are mastering.

Bobs and Tweets, Trick or Tweet is a little long to read as a good night book. However, it’s a great example of a book that you read once and then let your emerging reader read it again, this time by themselves. Also, at only $5.99 retail (cheaper through some link), it’s priced to encourage reading.
