Win an autographed copy of Standing Up by Director D.J. Caruso

Standing Up is the film adaptation of The Goats, a popular young adult book that was written in 1990.  It’s an anti-bullying film that follows the adventures of two tweens who marooned on an island by a group of bullies.  The two kids are embarrassed and instead of going back to camp, go on a 3 day adventure.

While the story may sound rote for us adults, let’s remember that this is meant to be a film that’s enjoyable for kids under 16.  However, watching the trailer for Standing Up my wife got a bit teary eyed, then encouraged at the happy parts and at the end commanded me to get this movie.

The subject of bullying interests me because we have two boys and they’ll certainly encounter a bully in their school at some time.  Bullies certainly have a reason for why they do what they do, but that is no excuse.   Are they bullied at home, not shown enough attention, abused, mentally ill or are just bad people?

I’ve got a post that I’ve been writing in my head called “Why am I Facebook friends with my high school bully”?   Part of me doesn’t care, wants to just unfriend him and assume that he had a troubled childhood.  However, it’s possible that something could be learned by chasing that subject, so it just might happen.

Bottom line, stand up to bullies and they’ll back down.  Whether you’re 12 and at camp or 32 and at work; confront the bullies and they’ll stand down.

As part of the release of Standing Up, they’ve released an app that allows you to sign an anti-bullying pledge.  You can print it, share it amongst your social networks or leave it in a place where your tweens can see it.  Then they can casually share it in their groups where it’s needed more.

They’re also giving away an autorgraphed copy of Standing Up by director D.J. Caruso.
