Ghoulia and the Doomed Manor, a loved and detailed graphic novel

Readers love seeing one of their favorite book series as they continue to improve upon its initial quality or enjoyment. Ghoulia, a graphic novel series from author/illustrator Barbara Cantini has maintained its very high level of quality and proved that a dead girl, and her also dead family, can bring life and excitement to ages eight and up. Ghoulia and the Doomed Manor is the fourth book in this series that really has that something special.

Ghoulia is back in her third entry from Barbara Cantini. You Tim Burton-inspired, middle-school, well-crafted, graphic novel loving people know what I’m talking about. Ghoulia and the Ghost With No Name may sound like a person who’s got the lyrics to that song by America wrong. We do things like that all the time when we’re in the car by ourselves. This series is the incredibly detailed world of Ghoulia, a spooky little girls whose family is even spookier. Think a more gothic Addams Family, but with much more charm and drawn to minute observations put into every page.

Ghoulia and the Mysterious Visitor, undead fun for primary school

 Ghoulia, Making New Friends Can Be Scary was a lovely surprise when we read it. The characters had that slightly familiar, spooky family vibe about them. There were traces of The Addams Family, a little Hotel Transylvania and aspects of The Nightmare Before Christmas. Yet, at the same time, Ghoulia was a creation unto its own. And the Mysterious Visitor has more of her-and her family’s story to tell and it’s even more delightful than the first one for the same reasons and more.

Ghoulia and the Mysterious Visitor goes all Empire Strikes Back and exceeds its predecessor in this lovingly drawn, charming and spooky story.
