The New Yoda Chronicles lovingly pokes the Force from all sides

Star Wars is such a massive cultural juggernaut that a little gentle poking and being made fun of is necessary. Don’t get me wrong, I do love Star Wars, but I also enjoy other fun things. For instance, LEGO makes fabulous shows (and films) that skew pop culture in a family friendly way that respects the source material while creating something that is entirely unique.  Star Wars The New Yoda Chronicles is out on DVD and brings all of the wit, charm and action that you expect from their brick-animated creations.

The New Yoda Chronicles are also known as the second season of The Yoda Chronicles. The first season of the show aired on Cartoon Network under The LEGO Yoda Chronicles, while the second season was on Disney XD using The New Yoda Chronicles. The name change between seasons was done so that Disney XD couldn’t claim it as their property.

The disc is 92 minutes of brick built Star Wars fun.  Its official rating is Y7, but our 4 and 6 year old watch it, love it and want more of it, now. There are four episodes on the disc with each episode running 22 minutes. That extra four minutes is an alternate ending to Clash of the Skywalkers.

It would be simple and a little dismissive to describe the episodes as easy to watch, but they are. Older viewers will enjoy seeing classic characters in familiar, albeit more humorous situations. Younger viewers are used to watching (classic) characters in the LEGO treatment. Aside from the animation, it’s the slightly irreverent treatment that they get that makes it entertaining for new audiences and fresh enough for vintage viewers.

The humor in the DVD is OK for any age. There is mild action, quick humor and is one of the few television shows that the entire family can watch where everyone sincerely enjoys it.

You don’t have to be a Star Wars fan to enjoy The New Yoda Chronicles. Your children that are too young for any of the films can easily jump into this DVD, understand what’s happening, laugh along and dig into the action. Fans of the films will enjoy it for many reasons; they’re funny, packed with references, sight gags and lots of things that young folks might not catch when they view it.

The Simpsons and Family Guy poked fun at Star Wars first to good effect. LEGO Star Wars The New Yoda Chronicles takes the same things that viewers had thought all these years and does it in a family friendly way and with the brand’s blessing.
