Origin stories from Capstone fill the young reader superhero void

Spoiler alert, we like to read and want kids to start reading at an early age. Key to that happening is finding subjects that they actually want to read about. For some that topic matter is undeniable going to be superheroes, like Batman, Superman, Green Lantern or Wonder Woman. Certainly there are some all age comic books that have those characters in them; but those comics helps further their interest in reading, but may not be at a level for early readers.  Capstone has a series of origin stories that feature Batman, Superman, Green Lantern and Wonder Woman designed fill that superhero void.

These books are true origin stories. Older readers know that the ‘birth’ of a superhero can change over time. What young readers will experience in these books are the classic stories that most people are familiar with. Superman is still Clark Kent from Krypton, Wonder Woman is from Themyscira and was given gifts from the gods when she was born, Batman is still Bruce Wayne and Green Lantern is Hal Jordan who was given the ring by an alien that crash landed on Earth.

Green Lantern and Superman are written by Matthew K. Manning, while Wonder Woman and Batman are written by John Sazaklis.  All four of the books are illustrated by Luciana Vecchio, whose distinctive style serves these characters, length of book and age content appropriateness spot on.

The vocabulary in each book is approachable for a second or third grader to read on their own. Our first grader can read most of them, but still gets tripped up on some of the four syllable words. The font is large and easy to read for anyone who can sound out the words too. Each book has approximately 40 pages with big, fun illustrations on almost every one of them.

At the end of each book is a glossary of some of the new (see: bigger) words that young readers learned. There is also an overview about each super hero and two pages of discussion questions to help kids learn (see: research) more about someone they didn’t know anything about.

Parents will really enjoy these books from Capstone because they’re only $4.99. That’s an oversized book, with great quality paper, superheroes and educational for the price of a cup of coffee. Factor in that this is content that kids will want to read-and that there aren’t many options for true, early reader superhero stores and these books are a slam dunk.
