The second week of Camp Warner Bros. brings a STEM based candy project with Crystal Gem roots for Steven Universe: The Movie.

Week 2 of Camp Warner Bros. brings the Crystal Gem Candy

It’s week number 2 of our at-home summer with Camp Warner Bros. This week’s activity is one that the kids could really get behind-making candy! The craft was rather simple and corresponded to the movie of one of the best shows in recent memory on Cartoon Network. The title of the candy surely gave it away for fans of the show. The film that ties into the craft is Steven Universe: The Movie.

Steven Universe went through five seasons on Cartoon Network and the show bridged a unique blend of science-fiction, original songs, friendship and fun. Our 10 year-old started to watch the show recently and likes the creativity and pacing of the show.  One aspect that he really likes about the show also is how Steven works with those who obviously have greater power to save the day, defeat evil and daydream just a bit.

The show ended its run in January 2019 and then seven months later Steven Universe: The Movie came out. There’s finally peace between Earth and the Diamonds, so Steven is taking a vacation. However, no sooner does he start to relax by the sea a being from his past comes back to destroy every organic thing on the planet. I can guarantee that there will be some self-discovery and some songs to keep things moving along. Steven Universe: The Movie is out now and available for purchase or download.

To accompany the film, the Crystal Gem Candy is just the sort of sugary treat with STEM sensibilities to engage ages 8 and up. Kids will need adult supervision at all times because it involves using the stove to heat up water, pouring sugar into it and stirring it thoroughly. Hint: our mixture was good, but it could’ve been great if our glass jar was bigger. If you use a full size Mason jar then it’ll suit you just fine. We used a smaller Mason jar and our candy had to be split into two batches, which probably impacted its flavor. In hindsight was also should not have let the 8 year-old measure the water.

As you’ll see the only ingredients you need are:

1 Glass Jar                           Food coloring

1 Pencil                                 3 cups granulated sugar

1 Paper clip                         1 cup of water

Cotton string                      1 funnel (optional)

The STEM based experiment works because the water evaporates from the mixture, which leaves the candy. It’s also a tasty treat that’ll work well when you watch Steven Universe: The Movie. It’s got a run time of just under 90 minutes and will be enjoyed by ages 10 and up. Even those slightly younger might enjoy it.

We were provided with SWAG to participate in this campaign. All thoughts are our own.
