Week 7 of Camp Warner Bros. goes old school with cars and Tom & Jerry

When I told our oldest son that Tom & Jerry Movie: The Fast & The Furry was the film this week I cast a wayward eye his direction. He’s 10 and I didn’t think that kids that age had even heard of Tom & Jerry. He returned a wayward eye towards me and said, “I’m down with old-school cartoons dad”. Your kids younger than that will be completely down with it too. Plus there’s a cool box craft that allows your kids to create and sit in their own ‘fast car’ as they watch the film.

He was a bit too old for the craft. However, his eight year-old brother was down with the classic box craft. If you haven’t done this craft then your kids will be amazed at how cool you are. Our eight year-old did the craft in first grade and told us all about the ‘car’ that he made in class. This craft can be as basic or advanced as you want it to be. You’ll need, a box that’s big enough for them to sit in, paint, magic markers, maybe some tape and possibly a pair of scissors or a box cutter.

Since ours had been through this rodeo before we just ripped off the tops and proceeded to color the box. Draw some wheels, a couple windows, flames on the side, maybe a cool license plate on the back and you’re good to go. Alternately, if you don’t want to draw flame or a license plate, just go to this link and print your own Tom & Jerry decals that you can glue onto your box.

Tom & Jerry Movie: The Fast & The Furry is G-rated fun that ages four through nine will enjoy. The plot is based on a reality show that our favorite cat and mouse have joined in order to possibly win a new house. Older fans will appreciate that the characters are pretty much the same. First off, they do not talk and they still wallop each other with anything that’s close by. Secondly, it’s 75 minutes which is just enough screen time for children to relax and have fun, without making mom or dad feel guilty. The film was released in 2005 and is available for download and on DVD. Older fans will also recognize many of the voices from the film who went on to voice other cartoons like Ben 10 and more.

If the kids make the cardboard car then it’s reusable for any viewing adventure and the craft, creation time is completely within your control. The craft can even be redone any number of times until your young racer grows out of it.

Have you made a cardboard racer for your kids to watch movies in their ‘own ‘car? If so, please tell us about it in the comments as we’d love to hear it.
