Mutts Go Green is an eco-themed collection of Patrick McDonnell’s classic critters that stand the test of time.

MuMutts Go Green, an eco-friendly trip for fans and newcomers

Mutts Go Green, Earth-Friendly Tips and Comic Strips by Patrick McDonnell is a collection that laughs in the face of the Christmas music test. We use that test as a barometer for holiday music. If said Christmas song is great, then we can listen to it anytime, not just during December. Currently only Kelly Clarkson and Hanson are the ones to survive our Christmas Music Test. * Mutts Go Green is a collection of classic comic strips that are being released around Earth Day; but go hand-in-glove with Earl, Mooch, and the overall vibe of perfection that McDonnell has created during its 25 plus year voyage.

We’ve read Mutts for more than two decades and it consistently makes us laugh, smile, and think about things beyond our immediate reach. These could be homeless animals, pollution at the beach, chemicals being used in our yard, what we eat, or big game animals in Africa. The reason that Mutts is so classic is that it evokes all of these emotions without beating you over the head with a guilt stick. Granted, there are messages in some of the strips, but they’re done by allowing readers to think about the situation and not preaching to them. Moreover, even when Mutts has a strip that makes you think about global or eco-centric issues, they’re always entertaining.

Mutts Go Green is a bit of a misnomer in that they’ve always been green, eco-friendly, and talked about issues germane to people who love humane societies, recycle, and probably do more for the environment than the average bear. This collection is green. Literally, from the pages, they’re printed on to the soul that runs through its creation this book cares about the environment and invites you along too.  The pages all have a green tint to them that border the comic strips. Some of the comic strips are in color, while most of them are in black and white. If you’re a Mutts fan then you know that the color of the comic does not matter.

Old school Sunday comic strip fans will say that the ones that would be printed in the big, thick paper are preferable. However, Mutts has always scaled up the panels to where some of the bigger comic strips would be the feature presentation. The case in point is that some of the one-panel or two-panel strips that feel just as at home on Sunday, as they do any other day of the week.

Mutts Go Green is loaded with eco-themed strips that old readers might have missed and will love. There are also some educational resources, links, and more that are presented in the same style as the strips. It also serves as a welcome to Mooch primer that introduces younger or new readers to one of the comic strips that they’ll surely love and enjoy many more panels of.

Mutts Go Green Earth-Friendly Tips and Comic Strips is by Patrick McDonnell and available on Andrews McMeel Publishing.
