Vegetables in Pajamas, not stopping a great thing in the Underwear series

Vegetables in Underwear will always hold a special place in our potty training heart. Little did we know that this cute board book would have legs that spawn off books just as great as the one that we held such fond memories of. If you haven’t seen any of the Vegetables in Underwear board book series then Vegetables in Pajamas is as cute as you can imagine. Picture a board book where dozens of softly drawn vegetables are modeling pajamas, using simple words to describe their bedtime apparel and eventually being tucked into bed. If cuteness were a commodity that kids could eat then they’d gobble this book up and then some.

That was us when we first saw Vegetables in Underwear too. It’s challenging for us to mention Vegetables in Pajamas without referencing that board book for the best of all reasons. The quality, enjoyment, and sheer amount of fun that crawlers through pre-K kids will have when engaging in the book series hasn’t diminished at all. The vegetables run with excitement in a way that greets those small hands in a manner that will start to sow seeds.

In this case, the vegetables are getting ready for bed, albeit in a celebratory fashion. They shed their day clothes and model the litany of possible sleep time clothing. Some pajamas are mixed while others match, and some are for the cold, while others are for hot weather. You’ll see vegetables celebrating a birthday in their pajamas, having a sleepover, brushing their teeth, and getting a sip of water just before they hopefully go to bed.

Much like the Borg’s titular taunt, resistance to Vegetables in Pajamas is futile. The target audience, those who are three through five will be ready to engage the moment that they see smiling eggplant and grinning potatoes on the book’s cover. Even those surly adults who begrudgingly have to read something to a wily toddler who is fighting bedtime with every ounce of their restless soul will be charmed by its optimism and mirth.

Vegetables in Pajamas has the energy to spare, but it’s not the manic out-of-control kind that will rile kids who should be winding down the day. This is the happy, grinning ear-to-ear kind of giddiness that will have kids playfully laughing and pointing to the pictures in the book. With a little luck and prompting from the final two pages, it just might serve as a call to sleep also.

Being that Vegetables in Pajamas is a board book, its audience is clearly defined. If they’re too old for a board book, they won’t find it interesting or engaging. In our experience that ceiling is around five and a half years old. However, those board book kids really found their jam when they discover the Vegetables in Underwear series. Vegetables in Pajamas is a well-constructed, highly entertaining book that those ages will want to be read to them, in addition to being one that they will thumb through by themselves when mom or dad aren’t around.

Vegetables in Pajamas is part of the Vegetables in Underwear series by Jared Chapman and is available on Abrams Appleseed, an imprint of Abrams Books.
