It’s almost one month before Halloween Comicfest, plan ahead for that because it is lots of fun. This week in all age comic books it’s a great week for Disney comic books. Specifically, Joe Books has Darkwing Duck, Disney Frozen, Disney Pixar Finding Dory, Disney Princess and Disney Pirates of the Caribbean. All of those comic books are only $2.99 also, so it’s a great value too.

There are a couple comic books this week that are better geared at slightly older readers who are 9 and older. Future Quest #5 is a fun comic that bring in some classic Hanna Barbara characters, it also has lots of reading and is plot centric. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Universe #2 is a new turtle title that might be too realistic for those younger than 10. Godzilla Rage Across Time #2 has some great art and realistic violence, but again is appropriate for ages 10 and up. There are also a couple Doctor Who comic books out this week. These books are great, but are too complex for those under 9.

Do you have an upper elementary or middle school girl who is looking for something? Check out Heavenly Nostrils Chronicle graphic novel from Razzle Dazzle Unicorn. That age group will also like Jonesy trade paperback, My Little Pony, Strawberry Shortcake and Unbeatable Squirrel Girl are among some of the cool all age comic books out this week that really speak to young girls.

All young readers will absolutely love Star Wars I Am Little Golden Books Library. It’s a chance to share Star Wars books for kids of any age. Elementary ages and up are able to read them and anyone will like looking at the art.

Laser Moose and Rabbit Boy, all age graphic novel greatness and more

Each one of us, to some degree knows a Laser Moose and Rabbit Boy. Laser Moose is a moose who lives in the forest. He’s strong, intelligent, does the right thing and can shoot lasers from his eyes. Rabbit Boy is his best friend. He’s eternally optimistic, sometimes a little too trusting but can pull it together to make things turn out OK. Even before you open it Laser Moose and Rabbit Boy from Doug Savage makes you smile.

The Late Jurassic, detailed, educational-all age, dinosaur book

Both of our children loved dinosaurs. This is great for us because we like dinosaurs too. We’ve saved all of the dinosaur toys and models that they have (Dinovember!!!) and are still thankful that one of our kids is in this zone. The problem for parents and therefore young children has always been a lack of all age accessible dinosaur books. They’re too cartoonish or detailed for the short attention span that young children have. Early Earth Journal, The Late Jurassic by Juan Carlos Alonso and Gregory S. Paul fills this void of dinosaur books perfectly.

How This Book Was Made, brilliant, unusual and really funny

How This Book Was Made is the latest book by Mac Barnett. The book’s illustrations are from Adam Rex and together they’ve made one of the most difficult to categorize, utterly strange and wildly enjoyable books we’ve read in a while. From the title you’ll think the book is an inside joke at how an author perceives a book’s creation process-and to an extent you’re correct.

But then you’ll dig into How This Book Was Made and see Barnett arm wrestling a tiger. We’ll meet his editor who eats fancy lunches in her skyscraper while wearing a tiara. Barnett’s multiple drafts will also be sent across the country, leaving dotted line like Billy from The Family Circus. The tiger returns with a fox, octopus, seagull, chef, panda and more to confront the author and look over the draft.

Dino-Mike, action/sci-fi reading for young readers

Mike Evans is your typical 9 year old kid. He looks up to his dad, who is a world renowned paleontologist who travels the world. Thankfully for our title character Mike has the habit of finding adventure, usually in the form of reanimated dinosaurs. Sometimes it’s a shadowy character pulling the strings, time traveling or meeting new friends who might factor into the story somehow. Dino-Mike is a continuing mini-series of books that will appeal to kids in upper elementary through middle school who like action, science fiction, dinosaurs or travel.

Every Wednesday is new comic book day; it’s when dozens of new books are released to your local store. In that amount are about two dozen all age comic books that are great for ages 4 and up. Some of the comic books in this list are going to be geared for tweens. We’ll point out those books the best that we can. When in doubt you can email us, trey@daddymojo.net, @daddymojo on twitter or ask your local comic book store, they’re jam packed with knowledge.

Oh-the podcast! Give that a listen if you would, it’s only 15 minutes and we’ll highlight some of the more unique books that are released. A rating on whichever service you’re listening to it on would be great too. Can you do that for us?

Let’s go over the comics that are great, but are for the older readers in the children’s category. These comics are great for ages 10 and up, mainly due to the content, which might have some death, violence or themes that aren’t OK for young kids. Atomic Robo and the Temple of Od and Doctor Who are fun sci-fi mini-series with more reading than younger kids will tolerate. Creepy Case File Margo Maloo graphic novel is a book that ages 9 and up will like, but its scare factor might be too much for younger ones.

Toil and Trouble is a fresh look at the story behind Shakespeare’s MacBeth. The art and story are beautiful, it’s one that age group-if they’re into the classics will eat up.

Our 4 year old loves Donald Duck and issue #17 from IDW is out this week. Invader Zim is a funny series-that you don’t have to know anything about the television show to really enjoy. Adventure Time 2016 Spooktactular #1, Miraculous #5, Angry Birds #9 and lots of others give kids looking for all age comic books many options to choose from.

MoonCop is for the adults. MoonCop is for the kids that get dry, observational humor. Both of these statements are true. From cartoonist Ton Gauld, MoonCop is unlike anything you’ve read before and is such that you can relate to it here on Earth or on the moon.
