Colossal Paper Machines is a big, fun, book older kids will love

Colossal Paper Machines is a massive book. It’s two bananas tall, a banana and a half wide, is one of the heaviest books we’ve received and is one that your kids will use, have fun with and spend hours putting together. The book has 10 models that older kids (or you!) can build out of thick quality, almost cardboard paper.  It’s an amazing feat of engineering, reverse engineering, creativity and precise glue placement that will boggle your mind.

Our 5YO son just asked to read My Little Pony: Friends Forever #17

Your five year old son is requesting a My Little Pony comic book. Don’t panic. It’s OK. He’s five and if he wants to read, then having material that he wants to read are key towards making that happen. Plus, My Little Pony is a fine all ages comic book that has lots to love for boys and girls.

Let’s acknowledge the elephant in the room. Reading a My Little Pony comic doesn’t mean that you son is gay, weird, or not going to love the Avengers soon.  And even if your son is any of those things you’ll still love them, guide them to adulthood and instill upon them the values of quality, independent comic books.

Vince Vaughn is wrong, but not for the reason you think

Before the other day I didn’t have an opinion about guns in school. The day actor Vince Vaughn came out in support of guns, but I haven’t cared or modeled my opinions based on what celebrities think since high school. However, that same day I was in a school lock down. It wasn’t a drill, the threat was valid and I got to see it all happen.

Normandy: A Graphic History of D-Day by Wayne Vansant review

At first glance, Normandy: A Graphic History of D-Day could be confusing to some readers. It’s a graphic novel with the word graphic in the title of the book about the history of D-Day. This graphic novel is historically accurate, so everything in the book is true and has realistic art accompanying the narrative. Author and illustrator Wayne Vansant has been drawing realistic war comics for years and has a series of graphic novels to help teach key points in the history of the United States military.

New all age comic books for Wednesday, June 3, 2015

Oh what a week. This week for new all age comic books sees one that I’ve been waiting months for, the last as we know it, two new all age titles, some classics, one that makes us laugh out loud just by the cover and a new summer cross over worth checking out.

Age of Reptiles: Ancient Egyptians is one that I’ve been waiting for since I heard about it. It’s wordless and features some dinosaur violence, so it might be too young for the really small kids, but our 5 year old will love this. And the art, on my, the previews I’ve seen for this are gorgeous and really put the art in comic book.

Archie is about to end. It’s issue 666 and number one, with entirely new drawings are coming. DC has two new all age comics, Bizarro and Bat Mite both start their six issue run and DC also has Looney Tunes #225 out also. Simpsons Illustrated is great for non-regular readers of Simpsons Comics, Mickey Mouse #1 comes out and Regular Show #24 simply makes us laugh by the cover. Our five year old also wants the new My Little Pony.

The Legend of Longwood is perfect for 11 year old girls

When we first moved into our house the neighbor came over with his daughter. “She has two conversations, dog and horse” he said of his then 7 year old. The Legend of Longwood is the film that she would’ve loved at that age and still would like at her current age of 12. It’s the story of a 12 year old girl that moves from New York to Ireland, love horses and fights to save a herd of them from a scheming adult who is not marrying for love.

This is why your children need to listen to kindie

Last week I was riding the train and I was reminded of something that happened more than a dozen years ago.  It involved a friend of mine who had kids when I was still at the stage of cleaning out the house with a leaf blower. The train experience and that instance are both great examples of why parents should listen to kindie.
