All age comic books for July 3

It’s new comic book day and the spirit if independence all age comic books skewing young and old are nigh. Last week we introduced our rating system and received some nice feedback on it. One thing that we forgot was those books that OK for the very youngest of readers, those pre-k kids. Yes, there are some books that skew that young and will demo up to those in elementary school even. So, in addition to the regular ratings, look for any appropriate for those pre-k readers. It’s been given the very obvious rating of pre-k. If you missed last week’s introduction here’s a recap of how things will be ranked and who they’re appropriate for.

This week in all age comic books check out Geronimo Stilton, Simpsons Comics, Marvel Avengers Black Panther, Sonic and much more.

LE: Lower elementary readers will enjoy this book, those are ages 4-8. It’ll have simple concepts, drawings or ideals that most likely won’t demo up to those upper elementary aged kids.

UE: Upper elementary readers are those who are 9 and up. These readers will enjoy a little more action, can handle lots more reading and want to be in with the cool kids.

E: Elementary is the type of book that covers any age that’s in elementary school. These are the go-to elementary reads like Scooby-Doo, Looney Tunes, Marvel Action, Captain Underpants, The Bad Guys and more.

M: M is for middle school, those readers that are 12 and up. These are readers that can hold their own and handle subject matter that’s more advanced than elementary school. The books that we cover here at Daddy Mojo won’t be graphic in this category, obviously, rather it’s material that is too much for younger audiences, but just right for those in middle school.

H: H is for high school and you won’t see much of that here. Occasionally we’ll cover a hidden gem that is for those older audiences, but that will be the exception.

All age comic books for June 26

It’s new comic book day and there are lots of great all age comic books out this week. We also had an idea while listening to a panel at HeroesCon. The panel featured some creators who have done children’s comics or literature and was a lively chat about what young readers want, how parents can help them and obstacles that get in the way. There is not a consistent rating system for all of the comic book or graphic novel publishers, so we created one.

These are the go-to elementary reads like Scooby-Doo, Looney Tunes, Marvel Action, Teen Titans Go!, Captain Underpants, The Bad Guys and more.

H: H is for high school and you won’t see much of that here. Occasionally we’ll cover a hidden gem that is for those older audiences, but that will be the exception.

This week in the podcast we’ll chat about The Bad Guys in The Big Bad Wolf. This is rated E (for elementary) in that it’s great for those in first grade, but those in fourth grade and older will also want to read it. Disney Afternoon Giant #5 is rated M (for middle school), not because of content, but because of the sheer amount of reading that’s required to enjoy it. Also in the podcast we’ll talks about The Bad Guys, Marvel Rising, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, Descendents, Spider-Man and much more.

This week in all age comic books we present our age appropriate ratings with The Bad Guys, Marvel Rising, Spider-Man and more.

All age comic books for June 19

Another new comic book day is upon us and this week has three of the go-to all age comic books. You can pick up any issue of these comic books and it’ll be entertaining (and appropriate!) for elementary aged readers and older. Over in the podcast we’ll chat about Rainbow Brite, Snow White, Scooby Doo and a couple others. For the record: the three go-to comic books that are out this week are Lumberjanes, Scooby Doo Where Are You? and Marvel Action Spider-Man TPB, Vol 1-A New Beginning. Now let’s look at three all age comic books that those in elementary school and older will enjoy.

Disney Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

This Snow White mini-series is for the fans. It’s from Dark Horse Comics and tells the familiar story of Snow, but from her perspective. This is 32 pages of gorgeous art with a story that folks know, but from a slightly different angle. It’s a comic book that those in upper elementary school and older will enjoy mainly due to the vocabulary. This is jammed with lots of words that those younger than 8 might not have the patience to read with their abilities. They’ll love the art and the story, but reading it on their own will be challenging.

Usagi Yojimbo, #1

Usagi!!! Usagi Yojimbo is one of the best all age comic books on the market. This is a reprinted mini-series from our favorite ronin rabbit warrior, but this time he’s in color! It’s a beautiful comic book that will entertain kids in elementary school and up. The violence, albeit with a rabbit ronin warrior, might be too much for those early elementary readers. It shows some mild ninja type, sword violence, but it’s more likely the reading that’ll scare away kids. This isn’t a word heavy comic book, but you do need to be able to read in order to really enjoy it. Ages 9 and up who like action, sword play, ninjas and a great story should check out Usagi Yojimbo.

Rainbow Brite, TPB

Friendship, action, color, a decided lack of color, friendship and curiosity are the keys to Rainbow Brite. This trade paperback from Dynamite Entertainment will enthrall girl readers aged 8 and up. Someone is stealing all of the color and it’s up to a normal girl to discover her super self to save things from becoming a pale shade of white.

All age comic books for June 12

It’s new comic book day and that means that some cool new all age comic books are out also. As we’ve previously discussed, some of these comic books are good for middle schoolers, while some will be great for early elementary ages. Use your judgment, ask the person at the comic books store or tweet us @daddymojo for specific questions. We also go over some of the comic books in greater detail on the podcast. Speaking of which, this week we’re talking about Disney Incredibles (and Comics), Star Trek Vs. Transformers, Goosebumps 2, Jim Henson Sirens and more. Here though, are three great comic books for ages as young as 7.

Marvel Action Spider-Man #5

Kraven the Hunter is enough to bring us into a Spider-Man comic book. Marvel Action Spider-Man from IDW Publishing is a beast unto its own. This monthly comic book is flat out awesome for ages 7 and up. It has the action that those ages want, the content that makes it OK for parents to approve and manages to do it all so that it doesn’t love street cred with the middle school kids. Even better, this all age comic book has Miles Morales, Spider-Man and Spider Gwen in the same book.

Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #45

We’ve always thought of Unbeatable Squirrel as a middle school companion to Deadpool. She’s a superhero, but left of center and this monthly comic book perfectly captures the superhero world. Granted this superhero has the powers of a squirrel and is a teen. This is not the battle, superhero stuff that will appeal to traditional MCU people, most likely. In this comic book, we have a fabulous story with great art that sometimes joins the Marvel Comics story arch. Issue #45 is a War of the Realms tie-in and it doesn’t matter if you’re following that summer story. Unbeatable Squirrel Girl entertains audiences in upper elementary school and up who are looking for fun, wrapped in great story with jamming art.

Plants Vs. Zombies, Volume 13, Snow Thanks

Plants Vs. Zombies is in a tie for THE intellectual property that our nine year-old loves now. He started playing the video game, but gave up playing that and now goes absolutely mental for these comic books or graphic novels. The monthly comic books stopped a couple of years ago. Thankfully, true to their word, they’ve been producing new, original graphic novels that have that Zomboss spirit. This graphic novel series is great for kids 8 and up who want humor, action and just a dose of age appropriate zombie.

All age comic books for June 5

It’s new comic book day and we heard something interesting this week that made us think. The premise of their post was the term ‘all age comics’ or ‘all age comic books’ shouldn’t be used. They posited that, in its truest form, an all age comic book is something that can be enjoyed by any age. There are middle school readers, emerging readers and many different levels that can further make that term more confusing.

For the record, what we list here on the post are comic books or graphic novels, in which, some of them will be OK for kids as young as three or five. In the podcast we’ll break down the ages that are best for each of the books that we’re highlighting. Here in the post we’ll also mention the youngest age that would enjoy or for whom the book would be appropriate.

So ‘technically’ all of the comics that you see here aren’t all age comic books. We will provide guidance and presume that you won’t give your kids a Vampirella issue and have them be on their way. Now, over in the podcast we’ll chat about some nice Disney releases, DC Superhero Girls, Science Comics: Cars and more. For now, here are three comics that will interest readers as young as 7.

Disney/PIXAR Toy Story 4

This is the graphic novel adaptation of stories that happen before and after the events in Toy Story 4. It won’t offer any spoilers about the film, but it’s the same characters that you know, love and will most likely do the ugly cry that you’ll try to hide from the kids this summer.

Marvel Action Avengers #5

Marvel Action Avengers is one of the go-to action/superhero comic out there today. It captures the action, fun and imagination of comic books that will appeal to readers who are 7 and up. This is action that is age appropriate and fun for all, yet being A-OK for those younger elementary aged fans. It’s classic stuff that you’ll save so that your kids can read it in 30 years.

Star Wars Adventures #22

Star Wars Adventures is a close second to being a go-to all age comic book. First off, you have to like Star Wars or science-fiction. If you like either of those then this is one of your go-to comic books. There is action and humor in this Star Wars series, so if you like your Star Wars all Force and no humor, this might not be for you. However, if you’re 7, like action, want a basic primer on the Force and are down with meeting any and all people in the Star Wars universe this is for you.

All age comic books for May 22

New comic book day is just around the corner and with that brings about two dozen great all age comic books that are fun (and appropriate!) for readers as young as 6. Granted, some of them might be better off for those upper elementary school kids, but that’s why we put the comics here. Over in the podcast we’ll chat about Looney Tunes, The Avant Guards, the X-Men, Spider-Man and much more. For now lets look at three comic books that will entertain readers 6 and up.

Sonic the Hedgehog, #17

The older readers might just have to get that Sonic the Hedgehog movie trailer behind them. Younger Sonic the Hedgehog fans are still very much into the comic book from IDW Publishing, and for good reason. This is a great monthly comic book that kids in elementary school absolutely love. The reading and vocabulary might be too much for those younger elementary students, but those who are 9 and older should be able to read it and thoroughly enjoy the action that it has to offer. Now, about that movie trailer, those teeth and the cliched, hammy performance of Jim Carrey……..

Hilda and the Nowhere Space

Hilda is amazing. The graphic novels are great and the way that Luke Pearson’s character segued into a Netflix show is a case study in how to handle a fan property in the 100% correct manner. The show is fabulous and builds on the Trollberg stories in a way that brings new fans to the franchise without distilling the content for established fans. Hilda and the Nowhere Space is a tie in novel to the Netflix series that gets ages 9 and up reading about their favorite blue-haired heroine who is under 12.

William the Last Fight and Flight #3

William the Last Flight and Fight is a beautifully illustrated mini-series that’s middle-Earth, with just a touch of evil. Ages 9 and up will love the action and its story will touch those older readers who know that the story could be so much darker and graphic, but it’s not. That is one of the qualities that make Stranger Things so entertaining. The story takes front seat so that the characters can shine, allowing lots of action, but tamping down any graphic elements. However, the story and art are so fabulous that older readers hardly notice. Check out William the Last Fight and Flight if you want a great, under the radar, action comic books for those 9 and older.

All age comic books for May 15

Happy new comic book day! This week has some different all age comic books or graphic novels that will make kids 6 and older want to read. These are the kinds of comics that kids will sneak off into their rooms, lay on their stomach and get lost in words until you wonder where they are. Just earlier tonight I found our 9 year-old doing that thing and it brought a smile to my face to see. In the podcast we’ll chat about Glitch, Teen Titans Go!, Seafoam and more. For now, here are three great new comic books or graphic novels that will hit kids as young as 6.

Glitch by Sarah Graley

Glitch is an original graphic novel by Sarah Graley. It’s technically published by Scholastic, but is done via Graphix, their graphic novel imprint. Graphix, similar to :01 First Second, is one of those publishers that you can almost guarantee that the book will be great and that stereotype is on target with this graphic novel. Izzy is a young girl who can go in and out of her video game whenever she wants. The virtual world is great, but what about things IRL? Glitch is filled with sharp images, great dialogue and action to please any reader who is 8 and up. Our 9  year old read this graphic novel in 90 minutes and promptly asked when the next one was coming out.

Marvel Action Spider-Man

This is the mark of a new storyline in one of the best all age comic books out there now. This is Spider-Man action with the help of Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy. It gets everything about the great all age comic books down perfectly. The action is great and it doesn’t have to amp up the language or bloody up the violence to make it great. Check out this comic book for ages 7 and up and you won’t be disappointed.

Graphix, scholastic, Glitch, graphic novel, all age comic books, comic books, marvel action, spider-man, marvel action spider-man, seafoam, the hypnoctopus

Seafoam #1, The Hypnoctopus

Seafoam is an all age comic book about a young girl who travels to a magic beach where there are creatures of all sort. The art in Seafoam is geared to those younger readers aged 6 and up, but has big, camp humor to pull in fans of Powerpuff Girls. For the price of $3.99 and 32 full color pages this is a nice deal that will get the imaginations of early elementary school kids firing.

All age comic books for May 1

Free Comic Book Day is nigh. The first Saturday of every May is Free Comic Book Day and this week has more than a dozen great (and free!) comic books for ages 6 and up. There is also a costume contest with the winners in various categories receiving $500 in free comic books and stuff from your local store. For all of the details on Free Comic Book Day just dig into their website.

All of this free stuff on Saturday doesn’t mean that the new all age comic books are taking a back seat to anything. In the podcast we’ll chat about Marvel Action, Goosebumps, Frozen, Giant Days and more. For now here are three comic books that will entertain-and be appropriate for ages 6 and up.

Disney Frozen: Reunion Road

Disney Frozen is like kryptonite to our two boys. However, to some kids this mini-series from Dark  Horse will fit that frozen bill until Frozen 2 arrives in theaters later this  year. The art in Disney Frozen: Reunion Road is gorgeous and the story will speak to those kids 6 and up that like the film. In this mini-series everyone is trying to get to the Harvest Festival, but Olaf is separated from the group. Disney Frozen: Reunion Road retails for $3.99 and is from Dark Horse.

Miraculous Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir: New Hero

As a television show, Miraculous is a guilty pleasure. There’s a Wild, Wild West aurora about it when Ladybug brings out the Miraculous and has to choose between a series of objects that allow her to solve the problem. This graphic novel from Action Lab is cut from the same cloth as the show. It’s packed with sharp lines, bright colors and hand-picked scenes from the show. This graphic novel retails for $8.99 and will entertain kids 6 and up, those who like the show or those passive fans who don’t want to admit that they enjoy it.

Blastosaurus, Volume 2

Blastosaurus is everything that young readers want from an all ages comic book. It’s got elementary aged characters, over the top action, an insane plot, monsters and more. This is New Zealand’s best selling comic book and once you see it you’ll know why. Think Savage Dragon, but with an all age sentiment and younger side-kicks. Blastosaurus, Volume 2 collects issues 4-6 from this mini-series that will become one of your favorites. There is also a Free Comic Book Day issue that features Blastosaurus, so keep an eye out for that.
