You give Muggles a bad name, that’s the way the Bon Jovi song goes, isn’t it? I’ve seen one Harry Potter film and that was the one with the giant snake. I haven’t read any of the books, but I do enjoy a good time and theme park experience. Packed away with all of this Hogwarts lack of trivia I decided to check out Harry Potter: The Exhibition. Harry Potter: The Exhibition in Atlanta is happening in the peach state until April 16. It’s a traveling collection of movie memorabilia, costumes, and an interactive rabbit hole of all things from the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.
It’s great to be able to attend cons again. Think of a pop culture interest and there’s a convention geared just for that. Dragon Con is a con that’s really unlike others. It’s held in Atlanta, Georgia every Labor Day weekend and every pop culture franchise that you can think of is there. Superheroes, middle earth, anime shows, television shows, and more are all represented by their fans or cast members of the shows. What about the science? The STEM, the brains behind the manufacturing of those costumes, real-world technology that goes into science-fiction, and those people who might be exploring space or the ancient history of Earth are not forgotten at Dragon Con.
Readers of the site may know that I lived in Japan for a few years. Thus, it would stand to reason that we really enjoy going to JapanFest each year. It’s being held September 17 and 18 at Gas South Convention Center in Duluth, Georgia. We were thinking the other day about people who don’t have an affinity for Japanese culture. Why would they want to come to JapanFest? What could they possibly get out of it?
It’s like an IMAX movie that you walk around in. That was the very clumsy way in which I tried to describe Illuminarium to a friend before actually going to experience it. That initial description is kind of accurate, but Illuminarium is so much more. Illuminarium’s SPACE: A Journey to the Moon & Beyond is an interactive marvel that simultaneously makes you want to photograph and video everything, all the while ignoring your smartphone so that you can experience the exhibit as thoroughly as possible. The exhibit is the intersection of actual recorded NASA footage, aromas, thousands of speakers, and the creative use of projection that utilizes all of the walls and the floor.
“I’ve been taking my sons since here they were that age,” said the lady who checked us in when we arrived at Momocon. She went on to tell me that they now have a local hotel room so that they can enjoy Momocon to its fullest extent. I could relate to her on both levels. Our boys have been attending Momocon since the youngest was three and a hotel room to crash out for a bit would’ve been nice. On an entirely different level, it was great to attend a con again and to that end, Momocon 2022 did not disappoint.
