Dino-Mike, action/sci-fi reading for young readers

Mike Evans is your typical 9 year old kid. He looks up to his dad, who is a world renowned paleontologist who travels the world. Thankfully for our title character Mike has the habit of finding adventure, usually in the form of reanimated dinosaurs. Sometimes it’s a shadowy character pulling the strings, time traveling or meeting new friends who might factor into the story somehow. Dino-Mike is a continuing mini-series of books that will appeal to kids in upper elementary through middle school who like action, science fiction, dinosaurs or travel.

Dog Man by Dav Pilkey takes the baton from Captain Underpants

If you have a young reader then you know Captain Underpants. He’s the erstwhile principal who fights evil while wearing his underwear and is often assisted by George Beard and Harold Hutchins, two fourth grade students. It’s also the publishing juggernaut that’s seen millions of books in dozens of languages, a feature film in the summer of 2017 and Dog Man is the character that started it all more than 40 years ago.

The Pinkaboos, middle school fright-friendly books scare up courage

The Pinkaboos are a group of friends who are Frights that are being picked on at school. The bully, Vex, is an older student who picks on Bitteryly, Belladonna and Abyssma for no reason other than the fact that they’re younger than her. It’s the job of a Fright to help their assigned human conquer the fears that they encounter during a nightmare. Vex refers to them as Pinkaboos because they attend Fright School, and pink is the farthest thing from scary, isn’t it?

Kids want science to make sense-what do you do to help that?

This is a sponsored post, all thoughts are our own. As an ex-educator I know that teaching our kids about STEM is incredibly important. All you have to do is look at what jobs companies are hiring for and you’ll see its backbone of science, technology, engineering or math somewhere in that job description. Bayer recently conducted a study, which revealed exactly what parents are thinking and doing when it comes to educating their kids in science outside the classroom.  From helping your child’s teacher to tips for the homeschooling parent it’s got at least one insight that proves parents need to embrace science learning and keep kids interested in science.

Gas Out Game is a laugh good-time for ages 4-7

We were in the toy department and accidentally knocked Gas Out Game to the floor. It made an immediate ‘pfffft’ sound; the kids laughed out loud and proceeded to make their own farting noise while pointing to each other. I double timed it before they wanted to get the farting game. Fast forward a couple of weeks and we were provided with a copy of Gas Out Game. It’s a very simple game to play that ages 4 and up will enjoy playing.

How we get our kids playing outside #LetsPlay

We’re a Let’s Play Ambassador and were compensated for this post. This post is brought to you by Let’s Play, an initiative by Dr Pepper Snapple Group that provides kids and families with the tools, places and inspiration to make active play a daily priority by building and improving playgrounds and donating sports equipment to groups in need. All opinions are my own.

It’s the dog days of summer and the kids just got back from school. They still need to play outside. When they get enough play they sleep better and function at school in a manner that’s much more appropriate for learning. Playing is a win/win, even if the kids don’t see it that way.

First off, let’s address the elephant in the room. It’s hot, humid and kids would rather be inside in the air-conditioning. That goes for everybody; parents don’t get a heat voucher that encases us in an air-conditioned bubble, which is quite unfortunate actually. I mention that because the best way we’ve found to encourage our kids to get outside and play in the dog days of summer is to go outside and play with them.

Its radical thinking isn’t it?

Our neighbors have a badminton net in their front yard. More times than not the neighborhood kids will yell at me to see if I can play. Occasionally, I’ll take them up on that suggestion and it’ll be me against a gaggle of kids for the first couple of points. After they win a couple of points (and according to their rules…); one or two of the kids will take pity on me and transfer to my side of the net.

If it’s not badminton, then I’ll jump in for a kick or two in soccer, break out the sidewalk chalk, race the oversized cars down the driveway that the boys outgrew or anything to shake up this kid’s world of play.

We’ve got some other tips on how to get the kids outside to play during the dog days of summer at our post over at LetsPlay.com. As a parent, what are your tips for getting the kids outside when they don’t want to go?

Bera The One-Headed Troll, Nordic, all age fun-with heart

There is a little Bera inside all of us.  Bera The One-Headed Troll is a graphic novel by Eric Orchard and published on First Second. Bera is a troll, to be clear, she’s a one-headed troll, because some trolls-including the internet kind, have two or more heads.  She’s a gentle soul who is much different than the other inhabitants of The Troll King’s kingdom. And, she’s found a baby, something that certainly flies in the face of accessories that other troll’s have, unless they’re using them as a spice for cooking.
