Strep, it’s not just for throats anymore

Charlie’s not much of a talker. He rambles on endlessly, but the ratio of intelligible words to cute children mutterings is far tilted in the former.  When he kept saying ‘bum hurts’ we paid it a little attention, but didn’t panic.  On the upside, that is awesome that our child is speaking in British slang.  However, if he says that he wants to wear his fanny pack then we’ll stop his lessons there. Sure enough, his bottom was red, it looked like a little diaper rash, but we’d definitely seen worse.

Ramblings of children: The fur on my arm is getting longer

When you drive children around in the car it’s a conversation roulette wheel. Sometimes it’s meaningless whispers and other times it’s priceless conversation akin to learning a second language.

Jake:  “The fur on my arm is getting longer”
Note: when you’re a parent you learn to think in the abstract. Your kid may seem like he’s muttering without purpose or syntax, but you can understand them. Thus, when he said this-and after a quick look back in the rear view mirror I knew what he was talking about.

Kid catch phrases, spring 2105: the danger hole

Kids say cute things all the time. A couple years ago it was the very cryptic “fi fi outside”.  For a while my wife and I thought that “fi fi outside” was one of the neighbors walking their dog. To the adult mind that makes sense but makes you question your neighbors who would have the faux Parisian gall to name their dog ‘fi fi’. By the end of that spring we realized that he was saying “leaf outside”, which still makes sense because of the ‘-af’ sound that they hear last.  This spring has created a new catchphrase, one that’s replete with soundtrack memories of Kenny Loggins.

Sleepless Knight is a classic young reader (comic) book

Sleepless Knight is the kind of book that I would’ve devoured when I was a young reader. I grew up reading Peanuts, comic books, Calvin and Hobbes, grown up books without illustrations and then started over again. Most of the text and illustrations in Sleepless Knight can be read by some children 6 and up and certainly 7 and up.

Is it possible to love someone too much?

At the risk of burying the lede, the headline is not meant to be hyperbole. Rather, it’s a reminder that kids say the darndest things and it’s one of the jobs of parents to try and remember as many of them as possible. A five year old is full of so many other emotions that they can’t process in a timely manner.   We’re used to most of the chaos and love, but the other day he said something that was utterly unexpected and beyond his years.

Too much love and a keen sense of direction to Radio Shack

To an extent, children are just like little adults.  They want to feel like they’re needed, wanted and appreciated and at its root that is what adults want isn’t it? Our five year old wants to help.  He wants to help use my tools, weed the garden, clean or do other things that need to be done around the house.  The bugger is that sometimes when children help, they end up moving the desired goal farther away.  Something happened last week that accomplished something, was unknown by the adults and gave pure, unadulterated joy to a certain five year old.
