New on DVD, Thomas & Friends: Spills & Thrills-good train fun for toddlers

One barometer of how old my children are is the shows that they watch.  Both boys love Thomas, but back when our first was young the transformation from real to computer animated trains threw me for a loop.   Now the computer animation is what I expect  from Thomas, Cranky and his other friends on Sodor.  Now our 2 year old watches Thomas the Train with his older brother, while he tries to pretend he doesn’t like it.

Thingy Things by Chris Raschka are offbeat fun that toddlers will love

My wife and I had the sing song discussion prior to having children.  That discussion was essentially that we would not ‘baby talk’ to our kids.  The Thingy Things book series by Chris Raschka may seem like a very basic, baby style book based on its cover.  However, as the saying goes, don’t judge a book by its cover.   These books are creative, goofy stories about animals-all the while using bigger vocabulary that your child can understand, but may not have seen in books yet.

Marvel Super Hero Mashers mash ups toys fill an action toy void-review #MyMashUp

Marvel Super Hero Mashers mash up toys fill (or create) a void in the children’s toy world.  You’ve got your block type toys (LEGO or KREO) that you physically make things like ships, creatures and your action toys that come fully assembled.  These mash-ups toys from Hasbro have interchangeable parts where everything but the torso can be switched out to another hero or villain.

Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus: Built to Amaze review

Typically for my birthday my husband and I do a date night to a new sushi restaurant or new bar. This year, though, I thought it would be fun to spend the evening of my birthday with not only my husband but our oldest son as well. We went to see Ringling Bros. Circus, Built to Amaze.  As the circus started after his bedtime he was out-of-this-world with excitement, which made me quite excited too. Other than splurging on cotton candy, I didn’t remember much at all about my own childhood experience at the circus and this was my chance to experience it all again with him.

Part of the joy of being a parent is having fun with your children.  Dinosaur Train is the rare children’s television show that has wit, intelligence, humor, teachable moments and education in the same package.  The fact that Dinosaur Train is enjoyable for the parent as well makes it even more of a treat.  Jim Henson’s Dinosaur Train Live:  Buddy’s Big Adventure is traveling the country and will be at Cobb Energy Center for two shows on February 22 at 1 and 4.

Big Apple Circus delivers in an intimate big top experience

Go big or go home? Not necessarily when you go to the Big Apple Circus. The Big Apple Circus is a more intimate version of Cirque de Soleil crossed with Barnum and Bailey Circus. I took my sons, ages 4 and 2, to see the circus with my 11 year-old niece who came to help. But between the clowns, the acrobats and the animals, they had us covered.

Megadeth taught me everything I need to know about children’s medicine

Small children are happy, uncontrollable running laboratories for things that adults can no longer get.  Think Jurassic Park on a microbial level and put those tiny ill tempered Pteranadons in your child.  One day our child had a rash around his mouth.  My wife said, “oh, I bet he has hand, foot and mouth disease”.  My immediate thought was hoof and mouth disease and then I remembered that Megadeth addressed this issue in their classic song Hook in Mouth.

Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey bring Built to Amaze! to Atlanta Feb., 5-17

I was provided with a family 4-pack of ticket in exchange for this posting.  All thoughts are our own.  Elephants are really cool, so are tigers, lions and bears. It was on the way out of the last Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey show that our 3 year old said, ‘can we go back to the circus tomorrow’?   Ah, children and their concept of time, it’s precious.  However, in real world time I knew it would be a year before they came back and we’ll see how interested he is then.
