Dad spends a night in the mancave: Rise of the Planet of the Apes

I love my wife.   Having said that, it’s good to watch a movie when she’s not around; no judgments- just me, beer, cats on the sofa and dogs by the fireplace.  On this occasion I finally got around to watching Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Mission Impossible 4 in IMAX is large and in charge action fun

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol is the 4th entry in the franchise and easily the most entertaining out of all of them.  The movie takes advantage of the picturesque scenery in Moscow, Dubai and Mumbai to all but require watching the film in IMAX.  I saw the film in IMAX and the difference in the scenes shot in IMAX and those that weren’t are like comparing an LP to an MP3 file. The Muppets fit like a green hand puppet

I didn’t really like The Muppets as a child.  It aired from ’76 to ’81 and I was too into The Six Million Dollar Man or thought that The Muppets were just for little kids.  However, my mother loved The Muppets and would watch them every week.  Because of that, I do have some memories of watching Pigs in Space and other Muppet skits during Steve Austin’s commercial breaks. The Way is personal & professional for its star & director

The Way is the latest movie starring Martin Sheen.  It’s story driven, with no special effects, sexual overtones, bad language or nudity.  In other words, it’s a tough sell in Hollywood.  We caught a sneak preview of The Way and the movie is effective, well told and a welcome distraction.  Continue reading The Way is personal & professional for its star & director

The Way is an earnest father/son movie that entertains in many ways

The Way is the story about Tom (Martin Sheen), an American father who’s living a simple, successful life in California as an optometrist.  Tom’s son, Daniel (Emilio Estevez) is killed in an accident while walking “El Camino de Santiago”, a 500 mile trail that crosses from France into Spain.  Estevez doesn’t appear in the movie much, but did direct it.  After Tom arrives in France to collect the body he decides to embark on the pilgrimage that his son was doing.  Along the way Tom meets some fellow travelers who have their own reasons for doing the trek. Continue reading The Way is an earnest father/son movie that entertains in many ways

Real Steel is built to last and solid entertainment

Real Steel is set in the near future, when robot boxing is very popular.   Charlie Kenton (Hugh Jackman) is a promoter who has discovered that his long forgotten son is limbo due to the death of his mother.  Charlie is not the father type and is more concerned with scoring the next fight rather than being a good dad. Continue reading Real Steel is built to last and solid entertainment

Dad spends a night in the mancave: Hanna

Sometimes I don’t need to watch a movie.  Some previews are so enjoyable and give away major plot points that you don’t need to bother with the time or money to watch the actual movie.    Hanna had a really good trailer and now that it’s available on demand we broke down and rented it.

Daddy Mojo at the movies: Cars 2

PIXAR has a high bar.  No other movie company has such a consistently high bar to jump over for any of their releases.  Cars was a good movie, but not a great movie, especially when looked at through the prism of what people expect from PIXAR.  With this background established I saw Cars 2 with a key member of their demographic, a 4 year old boy and his father.
