My First Book of Hockey –great look at the game for ages 8 and under

Growing up in the south I don’t know too much about hockey. While living in a cold environment isn’t mandatory towards playing or enjoying the sport it does seem to thicken up your blood that allows one to tolerate icy environs. I understand how hockey can be a fun game to watch, it’s just that I don’t understand the game. My First Book of Hockey from Sports Illustrated Kids is not intended for adults.

New all age comics for October 19, 2016

This is one of those weeks. It’s a week for the new all age comics when almost every single one of them is a go-to comic book. From Adventure Time Comics, Archie, a Garfield graphic novel, Invader Zim, My Little Pony, Popeye and Simpsons Comics it’s a great week indeed-and those book are only in the humor category!

Two additional funny all age comics you’ll want to check out this week are Herobear and the Kid 2016 Fall Special and Pink Panther Trick or Treat #1. Herobear is the Eisner Award winning series from Mike Kunkel about the story of a boy and his super bear stuffed animal. Any age will immediately love and relate to an alternate world where children’s toys have a life of their own. It’s lovingly drawn and has a timeless appeal that will draw anyone regardless of their interest.

There are a couple releases this week that are more appropriate for ages 12 and up. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Universe, Godzilla: Rage Across Time #3 and Kong of Skull Island #4. Those last two are action packed and feature too much real violence and danger from some readers who are under 12.

All age comics, comic books, graphic novels, pink panther, herobear and the kid, mad magazine, Godzilla, king kong, Garfield, invader zim

Mad Magazine is one of those things that teens may or may not like. We picked up an issue recently and it wasn’t funny. It certainly had moments, but not enough to merit its $5.99 price tag.  If you haven’t read an issue of Mad Magazine lately it’s appropriate for ages 14 and up, due to some of the drawings, humor and adult situations.

Graphic novels as a means to reading all age comics might not be everyone’s delivery system due to their cost. Part of that is fear and investment. A $3.99 investment in a comic book isn’t much, but a $13.99 purchase means that you really need to like it. Having said that, Plants Vs. Zombies Graphic Novel Boxed Set #2 is one of the safest buys you can do this week regarding graphic novels for all age readers. Our 5 year old can only read his name and likes looking at the art. Our 7 year old can read quite well and rabidly enjoys these characters.

Where is my closest comic book store? Did you leave a rating for the podcast? In this week’s podcast we’ll tell you our favorite all age comics of the week, as well as, having our 7YO tell you which ones he’s most excited about….in his own particular way.

Hillcrest Orchards, entertainment farming and U-pick done right

When is an orchard not an orchard? When it turns into entertainment farming! Entertainment farming is a term that we learned during our visit to Hillcrest Orchardsin in Ellijay, GA. Hillcrest Orchards is a massive orchard in Ellijay that spans over 80 acres and presents families with hours of fun in a variety of ways. Going apple picking, on the surface doesn’t sound like fun. However, factor in that there’s a petting zoo, multiple playgrounds and much more you’ve got a destination that will easily entertain kids 9 and younger for many hours.

Archie Meets Ramones, fun times in Riverdale and Max’s Kansas City

Stunt casting. It can appear in comic books and the results vary. Archie and his friends are very adept at doing the improbable. They’ve previously met The Punisher, Predator and other things that clearly do not belong in Riverdale. That is the appeal behind these mash ups. Archie and his friends behave the same way regardless of which fish happens to be out of water. In Archie Meets Ramones our gang finds themselves in modern day times about to compete in a band contest.

It’s National School Lunch Week, what you can do to help

It’s National School Lunch Week and Welch’s® Fruit Snacks has partnered with Feeding America to help kids in your area. National School Lunch Week is October 10th – October 14th. Through October they’ve partnered with Feeding America to provide 1 million meals to kids who need them.

In honor of this week Welch’s® Fruit Snacks challenges parents to pack the ultimate school lunch. Now, we’re no Lunchbox Dad. Our version of a successful lunch is getting it made and in the box at least 10 minutes before the bus arrives. If I want to feel like Super Dad I’ll make it the night before and put a cape around my neck. I do envy the art and creativity that he does when it comes to their kid’s school lunches.
