That special time when your kids are passionate about Disney Junior is fleeting. You parents with young kids might roll your eyes at that sentence, but once your kids get older and they watch things that aren’t as wholesome-or at such a high caliber, will understand in a couple years. For those parents with children 6 and under, Disney Junior at the Movies: Halloveen Party! is for you, and your kids. Coming to your local movie theater for only three showings from Fathom Events on October 21 at 10 AM, 26 at 4PM and 28 at 12:55PM this is the kind of big screen fun that kids through first grade will scream for.
This special Disney Junior event will include four episodes including Mickey and the Roadster Racers and a never-before-seen episode of Vampirina. The giveaway is valid for tickets to a Fathom Events movie theater near you for the October 26 or 28 show.
Disney Junior at the Movies: Halloveen Party! invites kids and parents to dress up in their favorite costume as Disney Junior hits the big screen. Costumes are welcome, just leave the fake weapons and face masks at home.
If you ask my wife to quote a movie she’ll immediate start saying something from The Princess Bride. Several times a week, even when not prompted she’ll say something from the 1987 movie. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of The Princess Bride, Fathom Events is bringing the classic film back to theaters for two showings. Inconceivable, you say? On October 15 and October 18 at 2:00 and 7:00 PM fans can watch a true classic on the big screen.
Free films don’t stop when school begins. The Battery Atlanta is hosting the Xfinity Movie Series in Atlanta that will run for six straight Fridays beginning one October 6 and running through December 1. That’s six movies, all of which are free, plus there’s no charge for parking for four hours-and your family entertainment for Fridays are planned out through the first week in December.
Keep in mind the dates are subject to change due to the weather.
October 6 Despicable Me (PG, 2010)
October 13 Back to the Future (PG, 1985)
October 20 Jurassic Park (PG-13, 1993)
October 27 Frankenstein (NR, 1931) – starring Boris Karloff as “The Monster”
November 3 Transformers (PG-13, 2007)
December 1 How the Grinch Stole Christmas (PG, 2000) –live action film starring Jim Carrey
For us the gold nugget in that list is Back to the Future. That’s the original version, rated PG that I know our 8 year old will absolutely love. There’s only one turkey that stinks up the joint, but it’s a seasonal film that’ll bring in families and kids who want to get in that Christmas spirit.
Check The Battery Atlanta for more information or to see what else you can do there prior to or after the film.
LUZIA by Cirque du Soleil is coming to Atlanta this fall. Guests can experience water inside the big top, jaw dropping acts and larger than life props in this unique production that’s unlike any other show you’ve seen. LUZIA opens September 14 at Atlantic Station and runs through November 19. Get ready transported to a surreal world of wonders.
For us the acts to be certain not-to-go-to-the bathroom during are Running Woman, Hoop Diving on Treadmills and Adagio. Adagio is three performers holding one acrobat who proceeds to do tricks on their hands. Sometimes the one acrobat is the rope and other times they’re the ‘ball’ that is thrown. As with all Cirque du Soleil shows LUZIA is comprised of 115 people from 25 countries.
Bonus II: We’re giving away a family four pack of tickets to the 8:00 PM show on October 5. The Grand Chapiteau opens at 7:30 PM with the front gates at 7:15 PM.
It’s great to see the growth that JapanFest Atlanta has had over the past years. Our children have enjoyed the festival for the past three years and the older they get the more fun they have. This year will be the best yet for them because in the past year they’ve both discovered Pokémon. It’s because of that we’ve accepted that Anime Village, in addition to our previous year’s go-to fun spots will be frequented.
Did you hear that Dan D. is retiring? He’s not the lazy guy near the vending machine, well, at least this is not about that Dan D. Dandelion, is in the final stages of the Crayola Crayon Retirement Tour. Yellow, at least this particular shade of yellow, dandelion, is hanging up the paper wrapper. However, he’ll be making a special stop in Atlanta this coming weekend. Not only is he appearing at five metro Atlanta Target stores, he’s bringing some presents.
Mars is more than a red planet that inspired bad movies in the early 2000’s. Mars is the red planet that NASA will visit within this generation and the astronauts that will be part of that mission are already born. To our 7 and 5 year old that doesn’t mean too much, but to adults who can fathom how large a feat this really is it’s mind boggling. This is the Summer of Mars and NASA is rolling out the red carpet for its Mars Rover Concept Vehicle.
The Mars Rover Concept Vehicle is touring the east coast and is appearing at Suntrust Park in Atlanta July 14-16, National Air & Space Museum in Washington D.C. July 21-22, Liberty Science Center in Jersey City, NJ July 29-30, Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York August 3-6 and at North Point Mall in Alpharetta, GA on August 12.
It’s important to point out that the Mars Rover Concept Vehicle is a concept. This is not the actually vehicle that’ll be rolling on big red looking for Marvin or manhunters. However, the vehicle is the real deal in that it’s big, life size and has some of the working conditions that astronauts will encounter up there. It also looks a lot like the Batmobile and somewhere Christopher Nolan’s Mars parents are smiling at their most famous progeny.
It’s also beautiful. The tires look like something a child would play with. They’re airless, metal creations that can fold inward, but are also strong enough to climb over rocks with enough traction to power through Mars sand fields.
The interior is part tank, hybrid car and DeLorean. Its seats are surprisingly comfortable and are compromised of a series of rolls. The interior dash is sleek and makes great use of space. There really is a gear shift too and it steers like a normal vehicle. However, its top speed is six miles an hour, so don’t any mental images of doing doughnuts. This vehicle is all science, packaged in just enough pop culture to make children dream about going to Mars.
I was slightly more excited about seeing it than our children. But once they actually saw it, they got it and you could see their eyes spin with wonder and curiosity. Do you have a great name for the Mars Rover Concept Vehicle? They’re having a contest on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook to #NameTheRover. The contest runs through August 6 so use the hashtag, keep it family friendly and get creative.
After the vehicle’s tour it’ll go back to Kennedy Space Center where visitors can experience all sorts of outer space adventures. In speaking with the representative from there our kids seemed most curious about the Rocket Garden. It’s two words that normally wouldn’t create a compound word in definition, but in this case they do and that’s part of the wonder of space travel.
The story of Cinderella is timeless and offers lots of avenues for twists. That is important especially when your audience might have short attention spans. Cinderella Della Circus has roots in the classic tale, but also offers up some strange twists and bigger laughs than some in the audience are expecting. It’s appearing at Center For Puppetry Arts in Atlanta through July 23.
