Pets and Their Famous Humans, short, artsy tails for 8-10

I’m a glass half full kind of guy. So when I first took a look at Pets and Their Famous Humans I had to set it down. I love pets. I really like humans and I enjoy art. In theory there’s nothing I shouldn’t have not liked about the book. Sensing that I was missing something I showed the book to our 10-year old son. He also loves books, animals and people. “It’s classy”, he succinctly said before diving back into the middle grade book he’s reading.

This is why you should not adopt Snoopy

If you like Peanuts then you love Snoopy. Snoopy is the beagle flying on the Sopwith Camel that has entertained generations of people. However, it’s very possibly that you should not adopt Snoopy. Yes, the beagle is super cute, has a small frame, is very easy going and great with kids, but you shouldn’t rush out to adopt one just because you fell in love with Peanuts again. Here are the pros and cons of adopting a beagle like Snoopy.

First off it’s important to note the timing. After every major movie release and natural disaster people want to adopt “the” pet. After Hurricane Katrina people were moved to adopt a ‘Katrina’ pet. We would say that those animals were in quarantine, but we have lots of other great animals. “No thanks” was quite often the response. The same goes for the aftermath of every major natural disaster where pet evacuations were needed and rescue organizations transported pets from there or accepted them in a safe area.

When an animal themed movie is released it opens up a floodgate of curiosity about the breed. 101 Dalmatians was released and animal shelters around the country received requests about Dalmatians. “I’m sorry, we don’t have any Dalmatians, but we do have dozens of other great dogs”, their response was the same as the people who wanted a ‘Katrina’ pet.  The same goes for any Chihuahua, Shaggy Dog or erstwhile Benji-looking breed out there.

Do you have an emergency and natural disaster plan for your pets?

This is a sponsored post. All thoughts are our own and if you’re a pet owner you really do need an emergency plan.  Before being a dad and starting Daddy Mojo I worked at a large animal shelter for five years in management. When you work for a non-profit organization in management you have to know everything about the business from top to bottom. During my time there I helped the shelter deal with various disasters, both natural and man-made. In all of those instances a plan to deal with your pets, as well as, an emergency kit with their supplies was something that I did not see enough of that would’ve saved time, money and lives. October is National Animal Safety and Protection Month and here’s a brief overview of what we learned on the job.

How Abby lost a leg, but gained a life and made ours better

I’m thinking about a teenager who I’ve never met.  I don’t know anything about them other than the fact that they were almost hit by a car about 12 years ago.  Were it not for a flat coat retriever and her love of children that car would’ve hit that child.  It’s a dog story so unbelievable I wouldn’t give it a second glance, had we not lived with the dog for 12 years.

The #WhyWeightPledge with Purina Cat Chow, 4/23 8-9 PM ET, prizes and cat chat

A good ole cat chat, it’s why the internet was invented.  As someone who used to work on the administrative side for an animal shelter, pet owner and social media guy the #WhyWeightPledge that Purina Cat Chow is doing is near and dear to me.  58% of the nation’s cats are overweight.  An overweight cat has a shorter life span and it’s all controllable.

The day our son learned about death

Recently we had a family cat cross over the rainbow bridge.  Ripley was an older cat, had some sudden health issues and died.  One of the first thoughts I had afterwards was how do we tell our oldest son that one of the cats died?  He’s always been close with the animals, all of whom are older, and teaching him about death isn’t something that I had given any thought to. So how do you teach young children about death?

Man’s best friend in the military,Dogs On Duty does it right

As a family we have two dogs.  For five years I did social media and fundraising for an animal shelter.  I’ve toured the dog training facility that trains most of the dogs that you see in airports.   I know lots about dogs, but learned even more as to how helpful dogs can be in combat situations by reading Dogs on Duty.
