Speed of Life, just the pace for teens, especially girls

Heed the warning on the back of Speed of Life, but take it with a grain of salt. The warning says that its story is sad, talks about death and loss; but then references cat videos, kissing and moving on. All of which are true about Speed of Life, a middle school book that isn’t as heavy as you might think and deftly handles real world emotions that kids encounter.

Sofia is a 14 year old kid who is having a rough year. Her mother died eight months ago and she’s unable to move on from that fact. She has friends, her father is there for her and she regularly reads advice columns about grief, but it’s difficult. Plus, she’s 14, there are considerable changes happening internally and physically. Continue reading Speed of Life, just the pace for teens, especially girls

Ice Sculpture Christmas, an above par seasonal movie

My wife rope a doped me. We sat down to watch a Christmas movie. It’s one of those movies that you are certain how they end; it’s just a matter of how cheesy, well made and put together it is at the end. I am all for cheesy movies. However, Christmas cheese is its own variety, it’s one that my wife specializes in and we’ll be watching movies like this for the next month. File under: my wife really loves them so we’ll be watching them too. This month we’ll be watching as many potentially smaltzy Christmas holiday movies so that you don’t have to, unless you want to. However, in the case of Ice Sculpture Christmas, it’s a really good film that flies above most of the Christmas fare you’ll see on television or video.

How Abby lost a leg, but gained a life and made ours better

I’m thinking about a teenager who I’ve never met.  I don’t know anything about them other than the fact that they were almost hit by a car about 12 years ago.  Were it not for a flat coat retriever and her love of children that car would’ve hit that child.  It’s a dog story so unbelievable I wouldn’t give it a second glance, had we not lived with the dog for 12 years.

A Tribute to The Ramones and their influence on me

When my husband was about 12 or 13 years old he found his love for the Ramones. Simple and direct, they were a 50’s 60’s rock band with punk overtones. His analysis of their medium known works is not always punk-but also hard-rock with 50’s sensibilities. He even saw The Ramones in concert twice during  the mid 80s in Charlotte NC.

Low hanging gift fruit: ProFlowers for Valentine’s Day giveaway #Spon

Valentine’s Day and procrastination go hand in hand around here.  From a creative perspective, I embrace procrastination.  From a gift giving perspective I try not to do it, but it sometimes falls between the cracks in the sofa.   Caring for the kids during the day and working at night puts my time (and yours) at a premium.  ProFlowers has provided us with 2 $100 vouchers to give away to two readers who may, or may not be procrastinating for Valentine’s Day.

Recovery from a Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy: Melanoma surgery

When you wake up from your Sentinel Lymph Node surgery you’re groggy and won’t remember much.    Groggy is putting it mildly as I couldn’t remember how I got dressed to leave the hospital.  It was an 8 hour bar bender that left me hungry and curious, complete with a stop at Arby’s on the way home.

This is my story about recovery from melanoma surgery.  They biopsied one Sentinel Lymph Node, accessing it through a cut into my left under arm, and they made an incision in my back.    Your recovery will be different, but this may provide a guide for what to expect, minus the cat in the bed and TV shows.    Continue reading Recovery from a Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy: Melanoma surgery
