Week 22-Mom and Dad your baby is the size of a papaya!

Moms, your little person inside you is the size of a papaya!  Dads, to put his in perspective, the next time you’re in the fruit and vegetable isle of your grocery store look for a papaya.  A papaya is one of those strange foods that is both fruit and vegetable.   It looks like a really large lemon with just a hint of dark green in some spots.

I’m in the store at least three times a week and aren’t sure if I’ve ever seen one.  There is a section in the fruit isle with all sorts of strange things, it could be in there, but some of them scare me.  It’s the island of lost toys for fruits:  there’s the brown, sickle shaped thick thing with thorns and somewhere in there is probably the papaya.  Unless your name is Gilligan or Beyr Grills you probably have no idea what a papaya is or how to eat one.

Regardless, your fetus is between 13-21 ounces and sleeping 12-14 hours a day.  When you feel the baby kick don’t bother calling Dad because we still won’t be able to feel it.  If you’re a blood relative of Pele or David Beckham, then call Dad, otherwise that kicking is a one person show until month seven or eight.

Moms, also about this time your breasts will become much bigger, your uterus will hurt and Dad will start to remember many terms about the female anatomy.  Guys, the uterus is just a fancy, planet like name for the womb.  The womb is what your child has been calling home for the past 22 weeks.

I imagine the womb to be a weightless, translucent paradise where Pink Floyd is played all the time.

You kick occasionally when the lights get flashy or have a dream that you’re speaking to a large group of people suddenly find yourself naked.  It continues with Animals and The Wall until around the 37th week when the house lights come up and the big show starts.

Next week:  Your baby is the size of a papaya….still.  Moms, your uterus will continue to grow and possibly hurt.

  1. I love papayas, Costco sells great ones but they do not look like large lemons, more like 1 foot long green squash-like things. I did not know it was a fruit AND vegetable 🙂

  2. And it tastes sweet and kind of walnut-y. You should try it. Cut in half, remove seeds, then peel and cut into 1-inch pieces. Tasty! But I hear ya on some of the weird fruit in that “special” place in the grocery store!
