Coca-Cola, getting it done for Veterans for 75 years

This year the intersection of The Coca-Cola Company, the United States military and the United Service Organizations (USO) all have in common the number 75, but for different reasons. The USO celebrates their 75^th anniversary and it also marks that same number of years that The Coca-Cola Company has partnered with the organization and been committed to supporting the United States military.

Best all age comics for November 9, Spongebob Comics and more

What are some good comics for my kid to read? We get asked that a lot and we do have some go-to best all age comics that are great for boys or girls. One of those titles is Spongebob Comics. Each issue has a couple of different stories, is packed with creative art, funny dialogue and does so without the rudeness that might put some parents off. It’s a great title for ages 6 and up, plus the comic book doesn’t have stories that continue to another issue. Readers can rest assured that you won’t be tricked into reading the second part of a lame story, but you shouldn’t because each issue of Spongebob Comics is flat out funny.

A mini-series that brings together two of our favorite titles is out this week. Batman Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures #1 (of 6) puts the all ages titles for these two mega heroes in one book. This is great for any age, the violence will be the same as the Nickelodeon show (not bad at all) and it’ll give young kids a ‘real’ super team up.

In humor comics this week kids 8 and up who love oddities and laugh just a bit outside the box will love Chimichanga. It’s the story of a freak show bearded girl who befriends a skinny creature who has the world’s worst face. Don’t be fooled by its surroundings, this is a fun title that’s just enough on the outside to let kids be cool and rebel, but with a fabulous comic you’ll want to read too.

Some of the other best all age comics this week are the staples, like Donald Duck, Adventure Time, Doctor Who, Back to the Future, Marvel Universe Guardians of the Galaxy and others.

We also mention some of the kidlit releases here and this week sees the 500 pound gorilla of kidlit, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Double Down hit stores. Mention this series to an upper elementary or middle school student and their eyes light up. Our 7 year old neighbor saw our copy of the book arrive and I nearly had to tackle her for it. This is the book that your kids will want to read this fall.

If you have a teen reader check out WWE Then Now Forever and Godzilla: Rage Across Time. Both of these series have action and situations that are too much for elementary age kids, but will fit the bill for upper middle school and up.

Rebellion of Thieves, twists up Sherwood for a new audience

Rebellion of Thieves manages to do what many properties with classic origins fail to do. It’s a tricky balancing act, trying to infuse the lineage that generations of people know with a contemporary-or future tale that can stand on its own. Kekla Magoon, author of Rebellion of Thieves, a Robyn Hoodlum Adventure has created the unicorn of middle school books that will appeal almost equally to boys, as well as girls.

Push! Dig! Scoop! is kid counting book comfort food

Children under 6 are fun. Granted they have periods of unpredictability, but on the whole they’re simply little fun people who like books that rhyme. Push! Dig! Scoop! is a counting book that rhymes by Rhonda Gowler Greene with illustrations by Daniel Kirk. For kids 6 and under there is lots to love in this book including the fact that it’s plus sized, packed with color and has a nice variety of machines.

Kid Crazy and The Kilowatt King, strange, happy, hyper creative kidlit

Don’t judge a book by its cover is a metaphor, however in this case it’s an apt one. By looking at the cover for Kid Crazy and The Kilowatt King I was expecting a book that tried too hard. I thought perhaps it would beat you over the head with its crazy vibe and outer-space illustrations. That, plus the length of the book led me to think that it’s packed with filler. Hello thought crow, Kid Crazy and the Kilowatt King is entirely different than any children’s book I’ve read before.

Paint By Sticker Masterpieces, small stickers add up to big art

We received a couple of books recently that are in a class to themselves. One of these books is Paint By Sticker Masterpieces; it’s the next level up from Paint By Stickers For Kids that our oldest son completed. Paint by Sticker Masterpieces is an intricate, detail rich way for advanced puzzle kids and adults to create unique works of art, in a cubist, rough animated manner.

Star Wars, Poster-A-Page: Creatures, Ships and Droids

Our kids are in the Star Wars sweet spot. (Note: I may use that phrase for the next 20 years) No, really, they both are in love with the idea and the fantasy that these classic characters bring alive. Star Wars, Creatures, Ships & Droids, a poster-a-page book is as simple, direct and enjoyable as a book can be to a kid who is between 6 and 11.

Disney Junior at the Movies-Mickey’s BIG Celebration giveaway, 11/12

Disney Junior, specifically, Mickey Mouse is the jam to our five year old. He watches and re-watches anything Mickey Mouse Clubhouse with zeal. Disney Junior at the Movies-Mickey’s BIG Celebration is in theaters for one showing on November 12. Mickey has a new series, Mickey and the Roadster Racers coming out and fans can check it out on the big screen before anyone else.

Mickey and the Roadster Racers is the series where Mickey and his friends run a groovy garage. They fix up all sorts of transforming roadsters, race and have fun. Minnie and Daisy have their own business too, The Happy Helpers solve problems for people in only the way that a fashionable duck and helpful mouse can.

This giveaway is for a pair of tickets to the 10AM show at Avalon in Alpharetta. The running time for Mickey and the Roadster Racers is 70 minutes. People who attend the showing will also receive a $5 offer to any Disney Store and a free e-book download. There will also be some other giveaways and perhaps special surprises at select locations.

For us it’s a chance for our youngest to finally see a movie that he wants to see. He’s seen a handful of movies, but they’ve been ones that were OK for him, not one that he actively wants to see with characters that he loves.
