Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse surpasses all expectations

If you read our giveaway that we did for tickets to this film you’ll know that I was skeptical. A non-jokey animated superhero film can’t possibly be good can it? Teen Titans GO! To The Movies was successful because it was the exact same format and voices and the excellent television show. But Spider-Man has multiple incarnations, lots of films and more. That mythos is one of the first things that Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse dispels with. Get over what you know; this is not that story, that’s basically what the film sets up in its trailer and within the first two minutes of it. At the end of the film I was correct and an animated superhero film can’t be good, it can be superior and better than most of the films out now from any angle that you look at it.

Geronimo Stilton, The Phantom Bandit is go-to elementary reading

There are a couple of book series that firmly hammer things home to those who are in elementary school. One of the most popular series of books in that category is Geronimo Stilton. Our oldest (currently in 3^rd grade) has been reading this series since he was in first grade. The books started out with us reading them to him and for about the past year he’s been reading them by himself. Geronimo Stilton, The Phantom Bandit is book 70 in the series and continues to entertain the elementary school set like few others.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse flew under my radar until I saw the trailer. It looks like no other film I’ve seen. At times it looks anime-ish, sometimes like a moving painting, motion capture and at other times like a traditional animated movie. An outstanding aside to its technical visuals is that kids really want to see it. Our 9 year old has been clamoring about it for the past couple of week. The prescient youth was correct and people are calling Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse the best animated film of the year. Dino-Christmas, a children’s book to make Jimmie Walker proud

Parents of a certain age have a Pavlovian response when they hear or see the name Jimmie Walker. For me and those other parents, that term is a wide-mouthed grin of “DYNOMITE”. His catch phrase from the classic television series Good Times defined a generation of viewers in the 70’s and helps make certain kids retro-cool today. The Dino book series by Lisa Wheeler, with illustrations by Barry Got makes ages 4-8 have the same emotion and think the same thing, even if they don’t say dynomite and Dino-Christmas continues their win streak.

All age comic books for December 5

Happy new comic book day! That’s #NCBD to those who follow along on social media and this week has some really cool new all age comic books that will interest those new pop culture fans, as well as those readers with an old soul. Over in the podcast we’ll talk about Star Trek Vs. Batman, Shazam, a new select-your-story-adventure and much more. For now let’s look at three comic books that will interest boys or girls as young as 6 years old.

Casper

American Mythology Productions needs to be on your radar for several all age comic books. One of them is Casper and in this case, Casper’s Capers. Issue #2 of Casper’s Capers is out this week and it’s got the ghost himself, plus Wendy on the cover. There will be much magical mayhem, with relatively simple vocabulary that grades 2 and up will be able to read. Thos readers who are slightly younger will enjoy the story and the chance for mom, dad or anyone else to read it to them. Casper’s Capers is $3.99.

Star Wars Adventures, Destroyer Down

Star Wars Adventures, Destroyer Down #2 of #3 tells the back story behind Rey. This is where an Imperial Star Destroyer on Jakku has been lost for decades. Now a huge sandstorm has revealed its presence, just in time for Rey, a scavenger to pick through its treasure. This is a fun mini-series that’s great for fans of Star Wars. It’s cut from the same cloth as Star Wars Adventures, the excellent all age comic book that’s published monthly. Star Wars Adventures, Destroyer Down, #2 is from IDW Publishing and $3.99.

Team Sonic Racing

Some parents will have to get past the fact that the blurry line between video games and comic books. To that end, Team Sonic Racing is essentially a video game tie-in of an upcoming Sonic video game. Literally, Team Sonic Racing is a new video game coming out in the winter of 2019. However, Sonic, the comic book is also hugely popular with elementary school aged readers. Face the fact parents: It’s a Sonic world, we’re just trying to navigate our children to content that they want to read.

What to do after Lord of the Rings? That was the question that Peter Jackson. His answer came a couple years after what fans would’ve liked-and it’s not in the form that they expect, but it’s here. Mortal Engines is the first book in a quartet that was written by Phillip Reeve. This is steam punk post-apocalypse, where the cities are now built on machines that crawl on land and devour other cities. Sign us up.

We’ve always been down with steam punk. On the way the Dragon Con last year our youngest sat beside a steam punk Colonel Sanders. To him (and us) it was one of the highlights of the con and produced some of the most memorable photos. I state that to say that my admiration of steam punk has somehow traveled down the gene chain to the kids.

Mortal Engines is a new epic directed by Oscar winning visual-effects artists Christian Rivers. Peter Jackson penned the screenplay, along with Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens. Producing the film are Zane Weiner and Amanda Walker from The Hobbit trilogy, Deborah Forte from Goosebumps, as well as, Walsh and Jackson. Even watching the trailer for Mortal Engines you can sense the undercurrent of the passion and style that made Lord of the Ring so epic.

Mortal Engines takes place hundreds of years after civilization was destroyed by cataclysmic events. Now the predator cities take down anything in its path and London is the top dog. Marvel Action: Spider-Man, a perfect publishing team-up

Marvel Action: Spider-Man sounds like a case of over the top branding. However, it’s presented that way for a very good reason. Marvel Action: Spider-Man is a new all age comic book that’s presented by IDW Publishing. On paper this is a match made in heaven. Star Wars Adventures from IDW Publishing is one of the go-to all age comic books and if they can reproduce that success on other characters that’s awesome. That is exactly the result with Marvel Action: Spider-Man. This is what an all age comic book should be. It’s jammed with action, sharp dialogue, gorgeous art and characters that kids know and want to read about-without sacrificing the action, it story or dumbing it down.
