When’s My Birthday is one that kids will want read to them

How many sleeps till my birthday? We start to get those questions about three months before the youngest one’s actual day. It’s a cute and precious thing when a child establishes a timeline based on sleeps. When’s My Birthday? is a children’s book that is intended to be read to them-and read to them with you inner theater major leading the charge. The more enthusiasm the better. It’s written for kids. That may sound obvious given that it’s a children’s book. However from its mixed medium art to the fact that there are no capitol letters, it’s apparent that the book is entirely meant to be read to children. This is the kind of book that young children will want read to them over and over, but especially near their birthday.

However, for the 100 foot view, here are five great all ages comics that’ll entertain young readers five years old and up.

Star Wars Adventures #1

Star Wars Adventures is one of the all ages comics we’ve been waiting for ever since we heard about it. It’s being produced by IDW Publishing and is for ages 5 and up. The existing Star Wars comics that are published from Marvel Comics are more geared for the tween audience and older. This one has art that fans of the Disney XD Star Wars animated series will connect with immediately.

Samurai Jack Quantum Jack #1

Samurai Jack Quantum Jack is a new mini-series that sees your favorite time traveling samurai, this time he’s the leader of a biker gang. If you liked the show on Cartoon Network or the mini-series that previously ended this will be right up your alley. Not a true all age comics due to the action, but ages 11 and up will be OK with this one.

Fruit Ninja #1

A comic book about Fruit Ninja-now they’ve just gone too far. If they can make a movie about emojis then they can make a comic book about Fruit Ninja. Juice Jitsu is the art that the Fruit Ninjas practice and slicing fruit protects them from time traveling super-villains. See…and you thought it wouldn’t sound interesting. Fruit Ninja has been downloaded over a billion times, so curiosity alone should make this one fun for ages 6 and up.

My Little Pony Movie Prequel #4

This is the final issue in the My Little Pony Movie Prequel mini-series from IDW Publishing. In this issue the Ponies meet their most dangerous foe yet. The movie comes out soon and old school Star Trek fans will appreciate the homage that’s played upon in the cover art.

Truckeroo School is rhyming, vehicle oddities via the looking glass

Truckeroo School is a book by David Kirk. Kirk is an author and illustrator who is well known from his work with Miss Spider, which kids in the know call Sunny Patch. That show ran for four years, from 2004-2008 and can still be seen today on any number of platforms. I mention all of this because new parents might not know that property or his David Kirk or his style of painting and writing. Based on Truckeroo School his style is Telletubbies, but mixed in with their Gremlin cousins who were fed after midnight. Accompany that with rhyming text that fans of Pout Pout Fish will appreciate and you’ve got a unique book that seems like it was left on this side of the looking glass by some wayward, yet very friendly monster.

Today I Feel…is effective and simple children’s feelings with art.

I’ve always envied cartoonists that did one panel strips. They have one square or circle to make readers grin, laugh or think about something. Sometimes you get it, sometimes you don’t, but the sheer creativity and pressure those artists are under to do it is impressive. Today I Feel…. An Alphabet of Feelings by Madalena Moniz manages to do the same thing, but does it through the A, B, C’s of emotions that elementary school children will encounter.

Educational options for elementary school kids on Netflix

We’re part of the StreamTeam for Netflix and were compensated for this post-all thoughts are our own. With school starting for the vast majority of students in the United States let’s take a look at some of the education options on Netflix for elementary school aged kids. These are all shows that either of our 5 or 7 year old kids could watch. Some of them skew younger, but we’ll detail the ages and why it’s good for them.

Brain Games

Brain Games is for the older elementary school kids. There is nothing wrong with the content for younger kids, it’s just all education. This originally aired on the National Geographic Channel and is about the power and mystery of the mind. It’s fascinating because it has various optical illusions that you know where the answer should be, but people (and you) make the incorrect decision.

Ask The Storybots

How do airplanes fly? How does night happen and more are discussed in this very cute show for young elementary school viewers or younger. It’s hosted by digital characters with the assistance of various animation and is very cute. It’s funny stuff that will engage young viewers into learning something even when they just want to relax.

Best all ages comics for August 30

Each Wednesday is new comic book day when multiple dozens of new comics arrive at stores. In that group are some of the best all ages comics. The comic books vary from week to week, but there are always some great ones out there. To find your closest comic book store just do a search for comic book store locator and one can easily be found within about 20 miles of you. The week the new all ages comics include some My Little Pony books (just in time for the film!), Go Go Power Rangers, a Star Wars Little Golden Book and many others. Here are five of the stand out best all ages comics and graphic novels that are out this week.

Big Nate: A Good Old Fashioned Wedgie

Big Nate is a classic comic strip. It feels odd to say that it’s ‘classic’ when new comic strips are still being published. However, all you need to do is read a series of them to realize that Big Nate is timeless and ages 7 and up will double over with laughter. The latest collection is Big Nate: A Good Old Fashioned Wedgie.

Mighty Jack and the Goblin King

From Little Robot to Zita the Space Girl author Ben Hatke has created some fabulous worlds that engage and entertain young readers. His space traveling hero is back, Mighty Jack and the Goblin King is the second book in this series. If you liked Mighty Jack then you’ll really love The Goblin King. It’s even better than the first one because it’s got a faster pace, has lots of action and still manages to develop Maddy, Jack and Lilly. This is kind of graphic novel that you can read to any age child.

Doctor who, doctor who lost dimension alpha, Harvey hits, Casper, Richie rick, best all ages comic, star wars, star wars the force awakens graphic novel, mighty jack, mighty jack and the goblin king, ben hatke, zita the space girl, big nate

Star Wars: The Force Awakens graphic novel

I would’ve loved this if I was a kid. Star Wars: The Force Awakens graphic novel is available for the first time in the U.S. This is BB-8, Kylo Ren, Rey, Finn and others in a very good chapter in the Star Wars cannon. It’s a graphic novel that has the great Disney animation that one expects from Disney XD and will translate to new, as well as old fans.

Harvey Hits

Casper the Friendly Ghost, Richie Rich and other classic Harvey Hits characters are back in their own monthly series. It was initially published in the late 60’s and this new, updated version from Joe Books is one of the best all ages comics for ages 5 and up.

Doctor Who Lost Dimension Alpha

We’re fans of the Doctor Who comic, but I can understand why some people are hesitant to jump in to it. Many of the stories are ongoing and folks don’t want to enter the story in the middle. For those people; Doctor Who Lost Dimension Alpha is for you, as well as, the Whovians who like time and space. This is a mini-series that has a danger so large that it requires the help of many doctors. Doctor Who does take some reading, so this comic book will be OK for ages 9 and up.
