Battle Bunny- creative & twisted children’s book at its best

As a child I remember getting a book or two that I didn’t want to get. It was boring, too young and intended for the child that they thought I was, instead of the boy that I had become.   Battle Bunny takes that premise, turns it on its head and manages to make one of the most enjoyable children’s books that my wife and I have seen this year.

A look at the 11 Halloween ComicFest Mini Comics

The other day we read over 4 of the 11 full size comics that were available for Halloween ComicFest.  These are free comics that you can pick up at your local comic book store.  Several publishers also released 11 mini comics that are also free.  They ranged across the board from knock someone down to get it (joking…hello, but GREAT), good to OK for their fan base.

A look at some of the full sized comics from Halloween ComicFest

This past weekend was Halloween ComicFest at your local comic book store.  They had 11 comics that were full sized and 11 that were mini sized-all of them free.  The nice folks at Diamond Comics were nice enough to send me some of them.  Here’s a look at 4 of the full sized comics to see if they’re worth grabbing up.

Lloyd and the Bear #2 continues the greatness from its first issue

A couple of weeks ago I discovered one of the most promising all ages comics that I’ve seen in a while.  Lloyd and the Bear is like Calvin & Hobbes in space.  Despite my clunky analogy, it’s original, in brilliant full color, appropriate for all ages and enjoyable for adults.

Lloyd and The Bear is a perfect all ages comic book

I gave our 4 YO son an ‘all ages’ comic the other day.  While the characters were appropriate for any age, they used phrases like “shut up”, “stupid” or “idiot”.  Kudos to my wife for catching that.  What a relief Llyod and The Bear is, it truly is an all ages comic book that is funny, sharply drawn and creative- everything you’re looking for in a comic book that is OK for young children.

The Bunker-an awesome twisty, noir, time traveling apocalypse story

I read the first issue of The Bunker and didn’t review it.  In a way it was like the episode in Star Trek where they first meet the Borg or the let’s kill Hitler episode of Doctor Who.  It’s was so imaginative, creative, weird and yet so relatable that you almost wished you hadn’t seen it so that you could watch it for the first time again.  I wanted to wait until The Bunker #2 came out to review it, just to see if it could match the level of the first issue.  Continue reading The Bunker-an awesome twisty, noir, time traveling apocalypse story

Of long marriages, Charles Schultz, Peanuts and forgotten MLK quotes

You may have heard about the really sweet story from Ohio this past week.  An elderly couple, married for 65 years died within 11 hours of each other.  Harold Knapke was 91 and his wife, Ruth was 89.  They raised six children and they saw their closeness in passing as ‘a final act of love’.   Whenever I hear stories like that I’m reminded of Charles Schultz, Peanuts and a not so famous quote from MLK.
