A look at the 11 Halloween ComicFest Mini Comics

The other day we read over 4 of the 11 full size comics that were available for Halloween ComicFest.  These are free comics that you can pick up at your local comic book store.  Several publishers also released 11 mini comics that are also free.  They ranged across the board from knock someone down to get it (joking…hello, but GREAT), good to OK for their fan base.

Super Dinosaur

Super Dinosaur

Run to get this mini comic.  I was somewhat familiar with Super Dinosaur and had given issues of it as presents to some young readers in the past, but had never read it myself.  It’s awesome.  A dinosaur with robot arms, his child handler, dinosaurs living inside the middle of Earth, real action, family values and kid friendly!

For the adults who need street cred to read Super Dinosaur it’s written by Robert Kirkman, the same guy behind The Walking Dead

Sesame Street

The art in this Super Elmo story puts it as one of the great mini comics from Halloween ComicFest.  It’s frame to frame bright, packed with Super Elmo silliness and younger kids will really love it

Itty Bitty Hellboy

Older kids who like Hellboy or frantic, borderline nonsensical comics will really like Itty Bitty Hellboy. It stars Hellboy, all of his friends from the movies and doesn’t have any objectionable content.  The humor is in the vein of Ben 10 or Itchy and Scratchy.  Younger kids may not understand the bigger words like ‘stealth’, but they’ll laugh at the pictures.

Itty Bitty Hellboy

Vamplets-The Legend of the Ghost Pony

I found Vamplets fascinating because it has a purple hue to every panel, a manga feel to the drawings and is just so odd.  The story involves a giant cockroach looking guy and a Destiny Harper, a human running errands with a couple of baby vampires, Vamplets.  The cockroach looking guy starts telling a story about the Ghost Pony and the trippy journey that will suck in young girls6-12 starts.

Adventure in Time

If you’ve seen the television show you know what to expect from Adventure in Time.  This mini comic is the same and is so busy that you’ll either find it ADHD-riffic or be confused by all of the bright colors.   It’s clever, creative and very weird, if you like em on TV, you’ll love this.

Sketch Monsters

Mandy is an 8 year old girls with a big imagination and a sketch book where her doodles come to life. The monsters are drawn in a dreamy way while Mandy and other humans have crisp outlines.  Kids 5-12 will like this for numerous reasons.

Sketch Monsters

Zombie Kid Diaries

Zombie Kid Diaries Walking Dad is interesting because it features far more words than illustrations.  It’s essentially a short story with some funny zombie drawings.  If you like their books you’ll like this short story.  If you’re unfamiliar with it, thing Wimpy Kid, but he’s a zombie.

My Little Pony-Halloween Edition

Yeah, I was kind of surprised at how much I liked My Little Pony-Halloween Edition.  It features your favorite six Little Ponies as they encounter a castle in the woods.  The MC Escher nod on the second page and other very subtle touches make the comic more approachable to those outside of its demographic.  It also helps that the art is crisp and not as manic as some other pre-tween comics.

My Little Pony

Ben 10 Omniverse

If you like the TV show or other Ben 10 comics you’ll love this mini comic.  It features 3 quick stories or character background on the show and books that kids 6-14 can’t get enough of.

Pantalones, TX Zombinata

Pantalones, TX is a busy comic that kids who like very silly, out of the box art and story will read, laugh and love.  Don’t question or try to understand parents, just be thankful that the kids are reading.

Archie’s Pals n Gals

Kudos to Archie for remaining the same over the past 50 years with Betty, Veronica, Jughead and everything else.  It’s the go-to comic for young girls with simple stories, high school fun, dating, sports and pre teen life.  If you’ve got a girl in that demographic they’ll love it.

Whew!  That’s the wrap up, stop by your local comic books store.  Don’t know where yours is located-find it here!
