Happy new comic book day! This week has a massive variety of graphic novels, books and all age comic books that are coming to your local stores. You’re the parent to a two year-old who wants to read about Aquaman? Maybe that same child wants to read about The Incredibles? You’re a middle school student who loves Star Vs. The Forces of Evil and want to dig deep into her world? Maybe you love the classics and want to read some Big Nate; this is your week, so read on or check out the podcast for an in-depth look at some of them.

Hilda and the Hidden People

Up until this month Hilda has only been in Luke Pearson’s beautiful books. This month has Hilda coming to Netflix and in her first middle school book, Hilda and the Hidden People. This is a book that upper elementary school will love. Each chapter is approximately seven pages, with some pages having the classic, distinctive art that Pearson has been doing for years with this character. His illustrated books are works of art that children can enjoy. This series of books takes that world and spells it out deeper for those kids that want to read about it more. The second book in this series, Hilda and the Great Parade comes out in January 2019. Get used to seeing this series in elementary and middle school libraries if you’re not in the know about Hilda yet.

Earth’s Mightiest Heroes Adventures, Captain Marvel First Day of School

Captain Marvel meets Spider-Man in an all age comic book about the first day of school? Two of Marvel Comics go-to heroes team up for a one-shot issue about team work, exploring new things and growing up. At $3.99 this is one of those comic books that age 5 and up can read, enjoy the action and learn a thing or two, just don’t tell them that.

Big Nate Goes Bananas!

Big Nate has graduated from college. Not really, but the character, Big Nate has been sharing stories of middle school chaos for over 25 years now. This is classic stuff and Big Nate Goes Bananas! provides full color page after page of laughs, grins and some deep belly laughs that will make your children look at you funny. Moreover, Big Nate is a great example of 4-panel brilliance and simplicity. Sometimes it’s sublime, occasionally it’s bittersweet, quite often hilarious and always entertaining, this is Big Nate Goes Bananas!

Happy new comic book day! Every Wednesday lots of new comic books hit you local stores and in that lot are dozen of great all age comic books. These all age comic books will be OK for readers as young as five. They also span any interest that you can think of-one of them will certainly register with readers in elementary, middle or high school. In the podcast we’ll go in depth and take a look at Plants vs. Zombies, Henri’s Hats, Mech Cadet Yu, an all age Venom comic book and more. For now let’s look at three all age comic books that will interest readers as young as five.

Disney Frozen: Breaking Boundaries #2

If there’s someone in the house that likes Disney Frozen they’ll love this comic book. Disney Frozen: Breaking Boundaries is a mini-series on Dark Horse Comics that comes from the same heart and soul as the animated film and its sister comic book, Frozen, that’s published monthly. In this issue Anna and a new friend try their hand at different jobs while Elsa investigates a mystery that is happening deep in the wood. The vocabulary is a bit much for kids who are 5 to read by themselves, but they’ll enjoy the art and lessons within the comic book. Ages 7 and up will be able to read Disney Frozen: Breaking Boundaries without any assistance and can get their WDW groove on that way.

Venom Adventures Digest

What if Peter Parker was wearing the alien symbiote suit? Now what if he did that and the tales were captured in a format for all age comic books? Venom Adventures Digest does just that by collecting previously published stories from Marvel Adventures Spider-Man and Marvel Universe Ultimate Spider-Man. This is an all age story about Venom. You read that right. It seems as likely as an all age story with Deadpool, but this comic book makes it work and it makes sense. Even the Marvel team-up with Phineas & Ferb had Venom in the mix. It’s just that most of his stories are not for kids, this one is great fun that ages 6 and up will enjoy.

Voltron Legendary Defender, Vol. 3, #3

I wish I had time to watch Voltron on Netflix. The episodes that I’ve seen are action-packed, have great stories, enough humor to bridge the gaps and are perfect for kids 7 and up that dig science-fiction. The comic book from Lion Forge doesn’t mess with the success from the show at all. Voltron is all age comic book fun for those kids who want a smart comic book that’s perfect for kids, but doesn’t dumb down the story or packaging for them.

Variety! This week in all age comic books is jammed with variety. From the STEM minded tween, the sight word pony fans and middle school superheroes, there’s something for any kid aged 5 and up. In the podcast we’ll talk in detail about the new Dog Man, Nightmare Before Christmas: Zero’s Journey , Kitten Construction Company, Daredevil, Dinosaur-a Photicular book and more. Kitten Construction Company

A construction company that’s helmed by kittens and written by the author of Hippopatmister? Kitten Construction Company is great silly fun by John Patrick Green and appropriate for ages 5 and up. Those younger ages will need help reading it, while 7 and up should be able to read it by themselves. Marmalade is a kitten who is never given a chance because she’s too cute. But, she’s also a trained architect, so she teams up with some other kittens to form Kitten Construction Company. This graphic novel has more going for it than cute drawings of kittens and feline puns. There are some lessons kids can learn as they laugh along the way. Kitten Construction Company is from :01 First Second books.

James Bond Origin

We want to love this and look forward to reading it. James Bond Origin is a mini-series from Dynamite Entertainment about a young James Bond who wants to make a difference in the early days of WWII. There’s a new British government service that’s being formed and he might be just the man to take part in it. Take my money. As a child I read most of the James Bond books, granted they were screenplays, but they were still books. James Bond Origin has aspects of Ian Fleming’s real-life experience as a naval intelligence officer, but is firmly rooted in 007. This is a comic book that’ll be great for middle school students who like to read, can handle a layered plot and want to dig into another layer of an iconic character. If I were 12 years old this would be my jam.

Walt Disney’s Comics & Stories, #743

If you’re looking for oversized Disney fun, then Walt Disney’s Comics & Stories #743 is for you. This comic book is great for any age to look at and enjoy, but the reading in this series makes it good for ages 8 and up to read by themselves. This is thick, retails for $5.99 and has at least two stories that’ll entertain the Disney kids as you plan your next trip to Orlando.

All age comic books for August 29

It’s almost new comic book day and the new all age comic books and graphic novels have a lot to offer young readers. Over in the podcast we’ll take a deeper look at some great graphic novels like Ozy  and Millie, The Baby-Sitters Club and more, plus some cool comic books like Star Wars and three neat offerings from DC Comics. For now though, here are three all age comic books that will entertain kids of all sort who are aged 6 and up. What all age comic books are you reading this week? Pink Panther Surfside Special

If you’re a fan, a real fan of certain characters these season issues are a must-own. Lumberjanes and Simpsons Comics also have some great summer or holiday themed issues. Pink Panther Surfside Special is all about big Pink at the beach. There are two new tales, one with MisterJaw and the other with the Little Man. Fans of the recent cartoons, as well as kids who like silly, slapstick fun will really enjoy this one-shot comic book. Pink Panther Surfside Special from American Mythology Productions is $3.99 and appropriate for ages 6 and up.

Ms. Marvel #33

Kamala, that’s Ms. Marvel if you’re a baddie. Ms. Marvel is a great comic book for kids in fifth grade and  up. There is a girl at our bus stop that is in fifth grade and she loves Ms. Marvel. The technical rating on Ms. Marvel from Marvel Comics is Teen, but realistically there’s nothing in this comic book that’s offensive or inappropriate for 11 year-olds. Ms. Marvel is a teen super hero who battles villains, while dealing with being a teen. This is fun, action based stuff, with a light heart-most of the time.

Star Wars A New Hope graphic novel

Star Wars is malleable. You can craft the characters and story for better or worse, as well as skew their ages younger or older. From a fan’s perspective, that’s the blessing and curse of the franchise. On the blessing side of things is Star Wars, A New Hope graphic novel.  This A New Hope in a graphic novel, that’s presented for young readers. Ages 6 and up that want age appropriate action, with science-fiction fun need to read this. It’s the origin story of a great couple of movies, with characters that will be around forever. The characters are drawn in a way that will appeal to young readers, in a realistic body image, as opposed to the New Hope graphic novel where Luke looked like a body builder. This is classic stuff that’s priced at $9.99, an affordable point for gifts or young library building.

It’s new comic book day and there are some great all age comic books out this week. Over in the podcast we’ll talk about Bartman, Jim Henson Beneath The Dark Crystal, Teen Titans Go! and more. For now, let’s look at three all age comic books that will interest boys or girls as young as six.

Disney Princess Comics Collection

Disney Princess Comics Collection Volume 4 has stories from Cinderalla, Tiana, Rapunzel, Belle, Pocahontas and more. These are comic stories originally published in the monthly comic book Disney Princess. Think of this trade paperback as a Disney Princess greatest hits from the most recent couple of issues. Girls 6 and up will love this series. They might need help reading it, but you’ll have just as much fun reading it as they will hearing it.

Archie Meets Batman 66, #2

Robin and Batgirl must go undercover at Riverdale in 1966. Batman will most certainly make an appearance with lots of BAM!, POW! and ZOW! to entertain kids of all ages. Batman 66 is a great series of comic books and this mini-series makes total sense. Archie has teamed up with all manner of characters from The Punisher to The Ramones. Having the Riverdale gang team up with Batman in one of his most famous incarnations is like welcoming an old friend to dinner. Kids 6 and up will be OK with the content, but those younger kids might not know enough about either property to enjoy it. Ages 8 and up will know both properties and be able to enjoy the series.

Sonic The Hedgehog, #8

Go into any elementary school library and you’ll see some Sonic The Hedgehog comic books. You’ll see them there for a good reason. This is one of the go-to all age comic books for boys or girls. It’s jammed with action, has humor, characters that kids know and love-plus a history where some parents will enjoy reading it too. Check out any issue of Sonic The Hedgehog from IDW Publishing and you’ll see why it makes a great gift to any school library.

This week in new all age comic books is dominated by one set of characters we regularly see and one publisher with a very specific niche. The other things that apparent more so than other weeks is just how overly kid-friendly all of the comic books and graphic novels are this week. In any direction you look there’s an all age comic book for readers as young as 6. Over in the podcast we’ll chat about the Disney comic books, the new Capstone superhero releases, Teen Titans Go! To The Movies, Steven Universe and more. For now though let’s look at three new releases that’ll engage readers in elementary school and up.

Justice League, You Choose, The Portal of Doom

Black Manta has unleashed lots of monsters all over the place and the Justice League has to stop them. Justice League You Choose, The Portal of Doom offers young readers the chance to re-tell the tale in a number of different ways. Most members of the Justice League get a shot to shine in this book that caters to grades 1 through 4 will enjoy. There are 12 possible endings, all of which offer young readers the chance to root for the good guys.

Gravity Falls, Lost Legends

Like Plants Vs. Zombies, this graphic novel from Gravity Falls is mandatory reading for elementary aged kids. They loved the show on Disney and the comic books or stand-alone books were very entertaining when they came out. Lost Legends is an original graphic novel with four new stories as they are told by Shmebulock. We’re now crossing our fingers for more Phineas & Ferb comic books or graphic novels and asking nicely to the Disney folks in bookland.

Delilah Dirk and the Pillars of Hercules

Delilah Dirk and the Pillars of Hercules is the third book in this action series by Tony Cliff. It’s realistically drawn and colored, plus it has action out the wazoo in an Indiana Jones style. Because of that, this graphic novel is going to be suited to middle to upper-middle school readers and up. Younger readers probably won’t want to read it due to its realistic approach. Older readers, even those not in school, will enjoy the intelligent story, action and characters in this great example of a graphic novel that entertains on many levels.
