Ratchet & Clank is a serviceable, average animated film

To understand what you’ll think about the Ratchet & Clank film and its lineage, you need to acknowledge where you are in their universe. Are you a long time gamer fan of Ratchet & Clank, parent looking for some entertainment for the kids or just an average person who somehow wandered into the theater? How much you enjoy the film will vary as to which group you’re in and just how much you want to be entertained.

The Okee Dokee Brothers, Saddle Up, rides strong for all

The Okee Dokee Brothers, Saddle Up is a kindie release that manages to embrace and straddle both sides of the proverbial fence at once. From the cover art to the name of the group, The Okee Dokee Brothers one might expect the music to be on the kid side of kindie. By that I mean description I mean that kids would enjoy it more than adults; sure it might be kindie, but that description is more aligned with puppets than serious musicianship. You know what I’m talking about.

However, much like Charlie Murphy and his judgment of Prince’s basketball skills, don’t judge a book by its cover. The Okee Dokee Brothers Saddle Up is satisfying from start to finish with complex, expertly performed songs that bring in a wide variety of instruments and song pacing.

What’s more, it does all of this while solidly being a kindie release that is something the entire family will want to listen to. This is not just a kindie release for those that like acoustic guitar. There are dozens of instruments on Saddle Up that give each song its own personality as the music takes you on their trip down through the United States. Dig these classic moms on Netflix #StreamTeam

Hey, we’re part of the #StreamTeam for Netflix and were compensated for this post. Having said that, all thoughts are our own and these shows are off the chain. Hello Mother’s Day! This time of year always gets me thinking about the moms that are most influential in my life and the classic moms on Netflix. These are the moms that, for better or worse, are awesome. Some of the moms I grew up with and a couple are more current, but whose personality and bravado make for incredible viewing.

Netflix, mom, mother’s day, the wonder years, harry and the hendersons, E.T., Arrested development, breaking bad, everybody loves Raymond, Gilmore girls, the andy Griffith show.

All age comics for April 27, 2016

This week in all age comics has the return of Strawberry Shortcake. The Purple Pie Man also comes back with all of her friends to show a new generation what Shortcake is all about. In other humor all age comic books this week check out Peanuts #32, Disney Princess #3, Madagascar #2, one of two new Archie books at the supermarket, a droll tale of cats or many others.

Science fiction/action features two Doctor Who magazines, Ghostbusters International #4, Invader Zim #9, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur #6, Sonic Universe #84 and a couple other titles that will satisfy any young reader fan.

All age comics, Free comic book day, young reader, spidey, marvel, peanuts, Madagascar, doctor who, Disney, invader zim, strawberry shortcake

For superhero all age comic we’ve got four titles that are all from the same publisher, Marvel Comics. They do not have a corner on the all age superhero market, but there are some weeks where they are the only game in town, in regards to super powers and young readers. Spidey #5, The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #7, Marvel Universe Ultimate Spider-Man Contest Champions #2 and another Spidey graphic novel all hit this week.

Spidey and Squirrel Girl technically have Teen ratings by Marvel. The content in those comics are OK with any age reader, but the vocabulary might be too advanced for some younger readers. Squirrel Girl also has a little bit of sass and sarcasm, just in case parents are trying to avoid those traits.

Free Comic Book Day is next week! Keep a look out for our review of the all age comics for FCBD. Where is my closest comic book store? How can I listen to the podcast for all of this craziness?

Parent Hacks, the online parent cheat sheet is now a go-to book

Parent Hacks is a genius website that parents probably don’t use enough. I say that from experience because I don’t use it, despite the fact that most of their tips are super helpful. Using ‘hack’ as a suffix is common now and has watered down how effective some of the hacks can actually be. Because of that, some folks may think of a ‘hack’ as half measured or low brow approach to fixing something.

The X-Men Apocalypse trailer has lot to love, bub

The X-Men Apocalypse trailer is out. Amidst the hubbub of superheroes fighting superheroes this spring comes one of the first team efforts to fight baddies. X-Men Apocalypse was a hugely popular story in the comic books in the mid 90’s. It’s also the backbone for the latest film in the franchise by the same name.

As a fan what is refreshing about this story is that it’s not the forced story of good superhero vs. good superhero. The film has a villain, a true big baddie who has traveled time and is seemingly unbeatable. The trailer for X-Men Apocalypse has the big budget effect pieces, end of world landmarks and super powers, including a fan favorite at the very end.

X-Men Apocalypse opens May 27, 2016 and is rated PG-13.

Slothlove will give you warm feelings about slow creatures

I don’t know much about sloths. I know that they’re the embodiment of slow things, have a couple of pointy fingers and look like Samara from The Ring when she’s crawling on the floor. They also seem to smile a lot; I’m not sure if they’re actually happy or if most of them simply have a fur pattern that humans identify with as a smile. You may have guessed that Slothlove is the most unlikely book that you’ll love about lazy(?) creatures that are probably happy all of the time who you’re most likely never likely to see in the wild.
