The Man of Steel Superman and the Poisoned Planet

Superman and the Poisoned Planet is a book kids will dig

When I was 7 I started reading Spidey, it was a version of Spider Man that was produced by The Electric Company.  The stories were Spider Man lite, the language & art was cartoonish and the entire comic was focused on young readers.  While the art may take some of the spotlight, with comic books and heroes it all comes down the reading aspects to make a good book really click.

The Man of Steel: Superman and the Poisoned Planet really is a book.  It’s an easy reader style of book with large print, relatively simple vocabulary with enough of a villain and story presence to be entertaining to kids 8 and up.   At 88 pages and only $5.99 retail, the books are reasonably priced too.   Hint: You can find the book ranging from $2.63-$6.00 online.   DC released a series of this style of book that have some of their super heroes and super villains.

The Man of Steel Superman and the Poisoned Planet In Poisoned Planet Poison Ivy makes a guest appearance in Metropolis where she covers The Daily Planet in ivy that is laced with Kryptonite!  She is going to hold the staff of The Daily Planet for ransom, or worse, unless they start printing the paper on recyclable paper.    With the building making Superman barely able to stand up, can he defeat Poison Ivy and her sustainably minded henchmen?

There’s a glossary at the end of the book for words that young readers may not know.  As a nice touch to the kids that really wanted a ‘comic book’, there are a couple full page illustrations too.  Those illustrations are in the same vein at the Superman comic that is aimed at young readers as well.

This is a nice read for parents that want their kids to enjoy reading, but need them to ‘read’ and not just look at the pictures.  It’s also quick paced and has enough action for kids to enjoy reading it, but they probably won’t let their parents know.

I was provided with a complimentary copy of the book by NetGalley.

  1. The glossary at the end is a nice feature. Not sure if publishers have been using this all along, but I’ve noticed it in some of my ‘Lil Miss’s books. That’s been nice, as she’s become a voracious reader.
