Danger Girl 1-back in the day

The Danger Girl/G.I. Joe crossover is simple, OK comic middle ground

Back in the day I used to read Danger Girl, when it came out.  It was one of those comics that issued an issue every month or so, semi interesting bad guys and half naked women on every page.  Don’t get me wrong, I do love beautiful women, but there is just something about Danger Girl that reminds me of those lyrics from Barenaked Ladies.

“They got the boom Anime babes that make me think the wrong thing” was the line from their song back in the day.  If the plot and action matched the half naked beauties that make up Danger Girl/G.I. Joe then it would be more forgivable.

The Danger Girl team is meeting the Joes for the first time.  Neither team knows that the other exists and they team up to battle COBRA.  The description from their marketing says it best, “Danger Girl and G.I. Joe together.  Spies! Girls! Ninjas! COBRA!

I like all four of those things and should’ve loved this book, but it was just OK at best and if I’m grading on a curve.  The art is the same as it was when I read Danger Girl.  It’s all very pretty, but also circa 2000 in the comic world.  The action sequences in the book are good, but not good enough to warrant a recommendation on story alone.

This book, that collects issues 1-4 of the limited series Danger Girl/G.I Joe is 30% Joe, 70% Danger Girl.  If you like Danger Girl, you’ll like this crossover.  If not you’ll wonder how they can fight ninjas while wearing next to nothing, albeit looking good while they do so.

Again, if there was more action that made sense, this would’ve been a much better graphic novel.   This book ends in a cliffhanger, so perhaps the action that redeems the book is in the second half.   Danger Girl/G.I Joe is released on March 12, 2013.  Let the fanboys who like Danger Girl call me a prude in 3, 2, 1…..

Danger Girl 4 Danger Girl 5 Danger Girl 1-back in the day

See, I was all about J. Campbell in the late 90’s.  Anything he touched was supposed to have huge resale value.  Flash forward 14 years and we all know that comics aren’t an investment and you better be buying them for the story.
