Thor Ragnarok, a fun, solid time at the cinema that also shakes it up

For personal entertainment I grade superhero films on a curve. As a film for other people we grade them as most folks would determine the enjoyment of the movie. That’s important to admit, especially when you’re talking about this genre of films. Thor Ragnarok enters this arena, both literally and figuratively as an example whose predecessors were graded on such a curve. Characters won’t die, heroes don’t change and their movies have an all too familiar pattern about them. That’s a shame because the medium that brought forth these stories; comic books has given people memories-or at least the template to have stories and characters that are fun, adventurous and a joy to escape with.

New all ages comics for November 1

What are the new all ages comics this week? It’s a great week for some all age graphic novels including the sequel to one of our favorites from last year, Dream Jumper. Dream Jumper, Curse of the Harvester continues the story of Ben, who is now in the business of dream jumping and business is booming; but a new force in the dream world is about to cause chaos. Dream Jumper is a great graphic novel series from Graphix for ages 7 and up. Also in the podcast we’ll talk about Snow White, a new Mutts Treasure called #LoveMutts, Dog Man and more. Here’s a look at five new all ages comics that you’ll want to pay attention that are in stores.

For Better or Worse

For Better or Worse The Complete Library is for the fans of this classic comic strip. This strip started in 1979 and ran through 2008. For Better or Worse is still in over 2,000 newspapers as reruns. This book was done with creator’s Lynne Johnston’s help and tracks the Patterson family through key points of their three decades in print. This was one of the few comic strips that had their characters age. Fans of the strip still remember reading about the death of Farley, the Patterson’s first English Sheepdog.

Simpsons Comics Explosion

Because you might not be able to purchase every issue of Simpsons Comics…..Simpsons Comics Explosion is published annually. This is a whopping 96 pages of bright blue hair, yellow skin, blue onsie, white shirt fun from Springfield’s favorite mess of a family, the Simpsons. Issue #4 of Simpsons Comic Explosion has Homer taking on a job as a stand-in for Krusty, a Professor Fink story, a Power Plants Vs. Zombies story and much more. Priced at $9.99 this is for those that already like Simpsons Comics, but it’s one of the best all ages comics that kids 7 and up can pick up on a monthly basis.

Adventure Time

Adventure Time is one of the most popular shows for kids in upper elementary school and up. Realistically, the show is best enjoyed by teenagers as most of the humor and attitude will be understood by them without having to explain what is and isn’t appropriate or real. To that end, the Adventure Time comic book from Boom! Studios fills the void of younger kids who want to know Adventure Time, but whose parents don’t want them watching the show. This is one of the all ages comics that teens will legitimately enjoy, in addition to younger readers, without sacrificing cool points or incurring the distrustful eye of mom (or dad). Adventure Time #70 kicks is part 1 of 4, so it’s a nice jumping on point for new fans.

Usagi Yojimbo

Usagi Yojimbo is one of those perfect comic books. It has ninjas, action, drama, wry humor and anthropomorphic animals. Usagi Yojimbo #163 has our favorite ninja being asked for assistance from a local thief, who has been stealing in order to return things to the public. Each issue of Usagi has a story that is greater than the sum of its panels and manages to combine action, heart and consequences into each issue. Usagi Yojimbo costs $3.99 from Dark Horse Comics and is best enjoyed by ages 8 and up who like comics that concentrate on story and art.

A Die Hard Christmas

With tongue firmly in cheek and intended for ages 10 and up, A Die Hard Christmas takes its cue from “Twas the Night Before Christmas”. Enter John McClain in Nakatomi Plaza, without any shoes as he evades one of the best baddies of all time Alan Rickman, who played Hans Gruber. A Die Hard Christmas will make fans of the original movie smile, but probably won’t resonate with those that haven’t seen it. Having said that I’m smiling.

Pocket Full of Colors is the story of Mary Blair and a colorful life

Some books arrive at the office and immediately draw me in. It doesn’t happen often, especially with authors or artists that I’m not already a fan of. Maybe three times a year do I receive an unknown book that so completely floors me that I’ll talk about the book to other adults? Pocket Full of Colors by Amy Guglielmo & Jacqueline Tourville with illustrations by Brigette Barrager is that book for us now.

Lumberjanes: Unicorn Power! makes you believe in Friendship

Remember when Sammy Hagar joined Van Halen and it was a big deal? If not-or it was before you knew rock and roll, let’s go back in the time machine. A famous singer, with his own band, was joining a world-famous band to be their lead singer. Most singers went solo after leaving a band. Hagar quipped that he was simply going the other way around. Lumberjanes, one of the best all ages comics on the marketplace is going Van Hagar on us by releasing Lumberjanes: Unicorn Power!, an original novel by Mariko Tamaki with illustrations by Brooke Allen.

Fowl Language: The Struggle Is Real, real funny

“I want to read the duck book”, said the 8 year old. “No”, I said. I knew that Foul Language would make him laugh due to some of the illustrations. He’s also a great reader, because of that the written jokes are ones that he could say aloud. It’s because of that reason that Fowl Language has its place on my book shelf that the kids can’t borrow from. The book has some choice, possibly profane language that you don’t want your kids repeating. However, for parents, Fowl Language is incredibly funny. It’s the kind of laugh out loud funny that moms and dads will share with each other and then laugh at the other’s kids and say “Your kids do that!”.

TENA® MEN™ Protective Shield at CVS, helping dads be dad

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #TryTENAMEN #CollectiveBias

Dad is a proud man. My sister and I often say this when he’s being strong willed. That’s another way to say he’s not complying with what the doctors say is best for him. I am the Sandwich Generation, taking care of small children, being a husband and taking care of an elderly parent at the same time. Depending on where your dad is, relative to his ability to care for himself, TENA® MEN™ Protective Shield is something that you’ll want to consider.

If I could have a time machine conversation with myself ten years ago I would encourage myself to have the difficult talks with my dad then. Sure, you probably know what he’s going to say, but he needs to know that there are options that will allow him to prolong the active, functional life that he’s been living. One of the biggest obstacles to that is incontinence.

The answer to your quest is as close as the Amazon Smile boxes you’ve been inadvertently collecting in the other room. As an additional bonus to children who are learning math, it’s also a chance to practice prime numbers. Make an Amazon Prime Guy (or Gal) boxtume costume that uses minimal resources, almost all of which are already in your house.

All ages comics for October 25

It’s the week of Halloween ComicFest, happening this Saturday, October 28. To find out which of your local comic books stores is participating-and what they’ll have there, please check out their website. Some stores will have more things happening; all participating comic book stores will have candy and free books, many of which will be all ages comics for those young readers.

In the podcast we’ll talk about a great one-shot all ages comics from one of the best Disney films in the past decade, a cool coloring book from a classic video game maker, an old school magazine for fans of monsters and preview one of the best original graphic novels of the year for ages five and up. Check out the podcast and share it with a friend. Now, let’s take a look at five of the other all ages comics that will entertain boys and girls.

Frozen Magazine

Frozen Magazine #17 hits stores this week. It’s for fans of Frozen and has the benefit of not being accompanied by a song that your child will sing over and over. Frozen has original stories and only costs $3.99.

Spookhouse

Spookhouse was a fabulous mini-series by Eric Powell and Steve Mannion that managed to be an all ages comics that was both scary AND fine for young readers 7 and up. This graphic novel collects the complete mini-series. That is worth stating because it was challenging to find in your local store. This is fun, spooky stuff that kids in elementary school will love to read.

Goosebumps: Monsters at Midnight

A series that could stand to have a monthly presence in all ages comics is Goosebumps. This week has the classic franchise dipping their toe into comic books with Goosebumps: Monsters at Midnight. It’s a three issue mini-series that readers in elementary school will enjoy. This is a logical fit because Goosebumps is a stable book at the Scholastic Book Fairs, which elementary school kids love to visit and learn about cool things to read.

Ducktales

Ducktales is the more action oriented Disney comic book title. Donald, Scrooge and the nephews get into all manner of trouble in an all ages comic book that has more reading than you might think. Ages 5 and up are OK with the content, however, ages 8 and up will be able to read it by themselves without assistance.

Tangled

Tangled The Series Adventure Is Calling is a trade paperback that, much like Big Hero 6, is one of the better and more original creations from the Mouse House. From IDW Publishing, this Tangled collection will appeal to girls more than boys, but has enough action to keep them reading.

The music in the podcast is from Hicham Chahidi over at Free Music Archive.
