City Mouse, Country Mouse, a visually stunning trip worth getting lost in

I’m not an animation purist, but I absolutely love stop motion animation. It’s the tactile notion that what I see moving on screen is a real thing. I immediately think of the creators behind it, their attention to detail as they move each model one small movement at a time. City Mouse, Country Mouse by Maggie  Rudy is a book that evokes that level of detail, love and commitment.

Monster Trucks is a monster driven great good-night book

“It’s a rhyming book”, one of the clever children in class commented as I was reading Monster Trucks to them. The book does rhyme and it’s a monster book that’s being released near Halloween, but the book can’t be defined one that’s exclusive to either camp. Instead, Monster Trucks is a book that contains many aspects of other books that children love and puts them into one happy package that ages 8 and younger will enjoy.

All ages comics for October 18

What are the new all ages comics this week? If you want to get some of the mini-comics for Halloween ComicFest the end is nigh. They’re packs of 25 mini-comics and only cost $4.99. There are some great all age graphic novels, collections of comic strips and all ages comics out this week including Here’s a look at five new all ages comics that you’ll want to pay attention that are in stores.

Zits

Zits is one of the classic comic strips. The best comic strips can make older audiences laugh without making the ones that are represented in the panels feel like they are not being treated with respect. Zits has been doing that perfectly for the past 20 years. What Was That All About: 20 Years of Strips and Stories collects some of the comic strips that creators Jeremy Scott and Jim Borgman have been telling since the late 90s. You can catch the daily comic strip on their website.

Mighty Mouse #5 of #5

Mighty Mouse, your mini-series has come to an end. This was so much better than it should’ve been and really surpassed our expectations. It blended the classic world of Mighty Mouse and bridged him to a contemporary setting and then back again. If you’re looking for something left of center in all ages comics, check out this issue or thumb through the collected graphic novel in a month.

Phoebe and her Unicorn: The Magic Storm

Phoebe and her Unicorn have been entertaining middle school girls for five books now through comic paneled stories. The Magic Storm is a graphic novel format, all new story, where Phoebe and Marigold figure out what’s up with the power, look for dragons and have fun. This series is great for upper elementary school and up. Boys can enjoy it if they give it a chance, but will probably bail at the first mention of ‘unicorn’, which happens quickly. Girls 8 and up, this is your jam.

Lumberjanes: Unicorn Power

Lumberjanes is one of the best all ages comics that you can pick up any month. Each issue is fabulous, mixed with science-fiction, camp hijinks, friendship and competition. Lumberjanes: Unicorn Power! is the first novel featuring April, Jo, Molly, Mal, Ripley and a couple special guests with horns on their head. Ages 8 and up should be able to read this novel. Each chapter is short, eight pages at the longest, has some illustrations and is a great book companion to a great comic book. Lumberjanes: Unicorn Power is by Mariko Tamaki and available from Amulet Books.

Voltron: Legendary Defender Vol. 2, #2

Voltron assemble! Voltron: Legendary Defender, Volume 2, #2 takes its cue from the show on Netflix. It’s got great art, sharp dialogue and lots of action. The vocabulary and action will be OK for ages 7 and up, but might be challenging for that age to read on their own.

Elizabeth and Zenobia, middle school Goth that works

When is a ghost not a ghost? That’s the grey area that surrounds Elizabeth and Zenobia, a mysterious book for students in Grade 5 and up. The book has a foggy air that wraps around the story for most of the book due to the fact that you’re never quite sure what’s real and what isn’t. Elizabeth is a shy, moody teen who’s just moved to a creepy old mansion where her father grew up. Zenobia is her best friend, a ghost who fears nothing and represents the characteristics that Elizabeth lacks. All that’s missing is an instrumental soundtrack from The Sisters of Mercy to make this coming-of-age novel complete.

Goodbye Christopher Robin is solid movie entertainment for adults

It feels odd to say that Goodbye Christopher Robin is a movie that’s best enjoyed by adults; after all, Christopher Robin is the linchpin in Winnie the Pooh. That is true, but this film is about A.A. Milne, the author of Winnie the Pooh and how the character that generations came to love actually happened.  If you’re a fan of Winnie the Pooh, the bear-and only the bear, then this film is not your cup of tea. However, if you’re looking for an interesting story about the creator of Kanga, Roo and the rest of the crew in Hundred Acre Wood then you’ll fall into Goodbye Christopher Robin without effort.

Before watching the film my knowledge about A.A. Milne, the author and any events that led up to the creation of Winnie the Pooh was nonexistent. (mild spoilers below)
